Can you borrow either a 85/1.8 or a 105/2.8 ? These are a lot better than the zoom. For ambient light work I would switch to primes even the 80-200/2.8 or the VR could be too bulk for you to hand hold well enough. You also have little time to fiddle with the zoom - events happen quickly either you are there in the zone or u are not.
