I would be interested to get some more info on this.

From every thing I have been told and read this was a problem with the AF 35/2D produced up to 2001 when Nikon made changes to the production of the lens to fix the problem.

I know that people have said not to store the lens on its side.

I have used this lens for over a year now, it has been stored on its side as it is always on one my cameras and have not had any problems with it.
