The first comment isn't sugar coated. It's called TACT. Which many of the people in this forum lack. It's also called courtesy, and would also lean towards being civil and gentlemanly to each other in the forum.

So please, don't be such a bitch. You'd never want to be treated like that at ANY POINT OF TIME IN YOUR LIFE. And don't compare it to National Service. It's an entirely different thing altogether. We are learning through experiences here in this forum, not being forced into a conscript army's disciplinary structure in a short amount of time.

bro,

thank you so much for this. so sorry tat i overlook it earlier and din reply earlier and sorry tat the forumadmin have to give a warning. :embrass:

i asked him a question and he has yet to share with us what does it mean and/or how to do it..... (mods, this is related to the photos hor)

"The photo wasn't executed well. You should have done this and this and this"

as compared to

"This photo sucks. Why did you do this? Are you retarded? This is a mess! OMG what is possibly going through that small brain of yours?" :thumbsd:

YES. this is wat i am expecting and i believed this is wat a lots of newbies expecting also.

Art is a very subjective thing. Even if you had posted Russell Wong's (or any other accomplished photographers') pictures here, someone will comment negatively about it. DP might even find some poses he doesn't like. So don't be discouraged.

thanks for the encouragement. greatly appreciated. :)

I'm not explaining to you because what i said is already simple enough to read and understand. You don't understand then go read it over and ponder it repeatedly. mods this is my final post and ot in this thread.

Friend,
when you shoot in a group in studio, who ever is shooting is calling the shots. Namely you tell the model what to do, if necessary (if you can do it quick) make adjustments to the lights - it can as simple as turning one light off or on... but this is only if you know what u are doing and can do fast your buddies are not going to wait for you. So if you did not get it done right, it's you fault n no one elses.... although the converse I have never heard it being said - my shot was great because my buddies were in the studio. If this was a camera club affair then my sympathies for you.

The concept of getting it right in camera seems to something you do not accept. Post production should be about gilding the lilly not painting the lilly. Studio is unforgiving if your lights are wrong it becomes a nightmare where even PS cannot not cure.

Since we shoot digital post processing is a necessary evil to bring every thing up to par. To correct what should have been done before clicking - sort of falls in over post processing. Along with using technics for the sake of using them. A bad pic can be disguised to fool those who do not know better but it can never fool any one who looks and really sees.

bro,

i get wat u mean. in fact i saw it way in page 1 which is the para u quoted tat i do not like PP.

if i PP, i PP them for certain effect or feel. (the diffused glow was used long long time ago by diffused glow filter which not many selling now) and yes, i admit tat i have overdone it.

its not tat i do not accept getting it right in camera. in this series, it was my virgin and i was given all the technical data and lighting was set-up nicely by a professional.

the f-stop, the ISO, the shutter speed (this 1 i may have screwed up by accidently adjusting it) was given to me. so to me, the technical asspect of this series cannot be wrong (beside OOF or blur due to handshake and/or not forcus properly).

wats left will be very personal liao. like composition, lighting angle, how many strope, the pose, the make-up, the dress, the necklace, the backdrop, etc. of cos there are certain basics to follow, which i am still learning.

anyway, thank you for ur reply and hope tat i did not offended u in any way. cheers. :)

Facts you must realise:
1. Professional can be wrong too!
2. Assume everything technically is not wrong, then in this series you've got handshake problem. .... at least you realise this .

before anything, bro u know i dun do portaits and i only shoot one person.

first comments on the pics,
pic1,
the feel is nice, i do not think there is a need for this picture to be sharp. like some have stated, it likes the "catchlight" in the eye to give it a better effect.

this is what i could come up with using paint :P if dun like let me know i will take it down.

pic2
nothing to comment.

pic3
the pose was not right, or you were standing at the wrong location, looking at the face, the distortion not nice.

pic4
i think lightings need to be stronger or you need to use a fill in flash

pic5
i find this is very subjective. there are area to improve to make it better.
one way i felt would to be make the rose sharp and the rest stay as it is.

i only commenting on how i feel able the pics. i dun think i would do a better job as i never try in this area.

ok now the others.
i see you drag the whole group out.lol
DP comments are hash, some are constructive. his pictures are good.

but DP are you shooting for any publishing house or any awards you received? this i personally would really like to know, i seen your pic. like many said they are like mag IQ. care to share so humble me can learn?

the rest of the crew, i dun think there is a need to copy "Comments". "Have a headache", why are you in front of the monitor. go take a pill and sleep.
Did all of you got it right the first time you did portait? which of you can say that? please voice out. i would really like to be corrected in this.

easier to shoot in your own group right?

lol

i think now got problem going to there forum liao hahahahaha

bro,

Comments here are hash most of the time. it is a good learning ground.
looking thru them, looking common points and work on it.

some pointers to help

reducing handshake, many ppl make the mistake of moving the cam once to you go "click".
make it a habit to hold the position for 1sec after to press the trigger.
it help to prevent blur image due to self error.

what is the software you used to resize your size. some SW can cause your pic to drop in IQ.

for everyone out there,
please confirm 2 things.
1) TS here is not looking for "nice pic" comments. any one found the TS stated in this thread or any of his thread for that matter?
2) How many comments in this thread are constructive?

just my 2 cents.

thanks for the suggestion on the hold for 1 sec thingy. why u only tell me now after we met so many times? sigh.... ;p

i am using PS7 for the resizing but normally reduce the resolution quality to about 8 (instead of 12) to prevent unauthoried using of my photos.....

hmmm.... u only shoot 1 person huh? i make sure u shoot others with the proposed arrangement coming up. hee hee

dun bully me la. :P

how the pic i edited can? the eye look different.

Since a lot of pple commented on the lighting and focusing, I don't want to touch on that..
Just wondering.. you name your pics for the dressing with corset mexican girl.. Is she a mexican girl by birth or is the dressing suppose to be mexican?

It does seems rather incomplete to me.. looks more like gothic lolita to me except that the dressing is not worn properly and the head piece is missing. for mexican look, it might have work better with a longer skirt, and w/o the corset, add a headpiece will be nice.=)

bro,

yah, it was supposed to be the gothic lolita as originally prepare by the organiser. and there is suppose to be a cape tat go with it to have a dracula feel, thats why the make-up and the hair style. but the cape was decided not to be worn for whatever reason.

Just to add after all these posts...

after all these replies... you should come to realised it's only how you view yourself and your works that mattered... should you find yourself a huge market for people that likes "your" style of pictures.. OOF or otherwise.. you're still a successful photographer...

does it make sense? why let others determine your level of success? 2 cents.. Direct comments still take time to comments, and if you're in a business - time IS a extremely valuable resource..

10 years down you're probably gonna help improve other people's works with your comments..

Anyway.. MERRY CHRISTMAS

thanks for that. i get wat u mean. just like "someone" had labelled a new model as "not pro". but the photos u took of her were good.

Proper Gothic Lolita is not easy to pull off.. I do suggest not to try GL unless you know what you are doing.. Otherwise.. it looks way off.. her outfit individually are nice but totally does not match each other.

anyway.. we gotta start learning somewhere ;p
