You're right, we don't see eye to eye. You're not worth looking at.

Obviously, you can't see the point. All you can see is "underexposed", "messy hair", "lousy PS", etc.

And only pictures which are perfectly exposed, neat hair, well-PSed, etc. should be exhibited, everything else should be thrown into the trash can.

If the masters followed your advice 60 years ago, how much poorer would the world be? All the great masters work would be lost just because you say "sucks".

You are worse than not having a brain. You have no heart and no eyes and thus no appreciation of art.

you know. the first time i posted pictures on CS. i got slammed by DP. he pointed out anumber of things which i myself didnt see in the picture, including underexposure.

theres nothing wrong, with photographing it how u want. u can go to extremes and shoot super underexposed, blur grainy pictures, whatever. its your camera, ur photographs.
BUT, i dont think DP is saying, that there is only ONE way to shoot pictures i.e.. super exposed, clear, sharp, nice background, no messy hair. if you think that is it, you dont get the point.

the point he is getting at, which I agree, although not necessarily always with his delivery, is that before you go ahead and experiment with whatever theme or style you want, you should at least master the basics of portrait photgraphy.

what we have here, and in some other posts, are clearly not people who have mastered the basics. so theres nothing wrong with pointing that out. sure, it may seem commen sense, or it may see like people are ticking off a list, but for those new to photography, these are not things that are known to them, so theres nothing wrong with spelling it out.

Actually not true la .... many photographers have no such problems, because they are really, really good ..... zemotion, Skye, Wills03, imasaint, berryhappy, joHo, Mattlock, and many others  ... I didnt recall DP or anyone giving them hard time ...

True lah! You are right lah!

Because zemotion, Skye, Willie03, imasaint, berryhappy, jOhO, mattlock, PBS, etc etc are really all very good leh!

I am a student leh. So still learning leh! But thankfully, with some exceptions, most people here are actually quite kind lah! So I don't get too much bruises lor!

Matter of fact, your pictures are also very good but maybe arty in nature (or maybe your hill is too high compare to most of our mountains?)

No lah! My pictures sucks what! According to some great and honest member, my pictures mean nothing, and offers nothing leh!

Maybe if I be humble and quietly listen to all the wisdom given to others, I might hopefully maybe take nice nice pictures like the others lor!:D

You are worse than not having a brain. You have no heart and no eyes and thus no appreciation of art.

Well, whether I have a brain or not, at least I won't compare apples and oranges, that much sense I do have.

If I have to appreciate the blurr, out of focus, under exposed/over exposed junk some of the photographers produced, spare me, I rather not appreciate art if this is art.

Weilong, your problem is, you cannot stand anyone with a strong opinion, especially if the opinion is one that you do not subscribe to. Normally, the world is a very large place. You may like the blurr and out of focus pictures while I prefer the perfectlfy exposed image. But your mind is such a small place, you cannot accept that I take a hard stance on what I like.

In a previous thread which was closed/deleted, I had actually mentioned that much of what was said by DP was technically sound, and should be like foundation lessons. That is not the issue. Such reminders will be necessary again and again when new members join, and I think, also for older members.

The issue was basically with delivery, and with such vociferous dogmatism that it appears his way was the only way.

Elsewhere, I had also mentioned that there are other ways to learn. I know of extremely well known and effective teachers who do not bother to teach such basics that you are talking about. What you said is one of the ways. But there are others, and it will be good to bear that in mind.

No lah! My pictures sucks what!
Ai ya ... here you go again, so humble .... :bsmilie:
You dont know how much you have contributed to the morale of many photographers, including myself ....
If i got a "perfect" image, i do think of DP ... and if i got an "underexposed, out of focus, blur grainy image" .... well i do think of the humble Doc .... maybe I could pass it off as an arty stuff i produce .... :bsmilie:

Aiya! So sad! My pictures only remind people of blurry, grainy, underexposed pictures that pretend to be arty!

Sigh! Maybe I should save up and buy a Canon 5D with the super-duper 85 mm f1.2 so that I can take super-duper sharp pictures yet with beautiful "bokeh" and colors the computers can make!

Good idea! Then hopefully, when you take super-duper sharp, nice color "perfect" pictures, you will also think of me! I am so insecure that I like people to think of me, you know!? Nice feeling, when people think of me. Make me feel so nice and warm inside!

Hey .... juz joking with you la ....
Keep up your high quality images ...
MOST of them are very good (of course some of them i think you should really trash them away...)
What is a 5D and the 1.2L compared to what you have now?

You know, it doesn't matter if you don't understand the comparison, I didn't expect you to anyway.

What I cannot stand is someone who is getting tiresome, and who doesn't really add value, who can't see beyond the obvious, and who acts like TL when it comes to telling people how a photo should be composed, lighted, PS-ed, etc., which is the substance of my first posting.

Well, whether I have a brain or not, at least I won't compare apples and oranges, that much sense I do have.

Aiyo, make peace pls, guys, don't quarrel over my pictures la.

Thanks to everyone, especially Shifu Deadpoet and waileong. A new photographer needs to be trashed left right center by seniors before they can become good. So why should we newbies get offended?

Happy Mooncake Fest! Haha... ^^ Tonight I'm going to Chinatown to take photos.

[Some of these pics were taken using a 4M Fuji digicam as I ran out of storage in my Canon SLR on Sunday. #^_^# Paiseh....]

Ok, maybe you would like to trash some of the photos, and leave 10 what you think is a good shot, and we can work on it.

MOST of them are very good (of course some of them i think you should really trash them away...)

You are right!

I should trash most of them! Those that people think are "very good"! And keep those people think are "trash"!

What I have now? Hey!

What I have now cannot do 10 fps! Cannot have super-duper colors! Cannot focus fast! fast! fast! Cannot have super-duper OOF background so that even there are messy background they still look very nice!

See lah.... you guys scare off the thread starter liow...

Do yourself a favour and shut up. It's tiresome to keep seeing your type of pointless comments.

I actually agree with DP's comments actually. Especially about the poses..

THink I shall type more, after I take off my contacts.

Firstly,

to DP:

While I understand your stance towards critique and all that, I believe in relevant context. I appreciate you're straight forward instead of being too sensitive like some critiques. However, the use of strong words should be measured against the tactile nature of the photograph put forward in the requested picture. For example, the snapshot of a smiling stephanie was inappropiate, but in this case it's definately needed.

The thing is what context is the photographer putting forward into this particular subforum. In this case apparently the photographer is trying to showcase his abilities, which if I maybe brutally honest, lacklustre. This is no longer the case of pictures of happy snap shots..this is the real deal where the photographer is presenting his 'art'. So let fly the bullets! Just don't get degartory..lol.

As for the snapshot case, if he didn't ask for critique then it's pretty apparent that it's more of a rememberance shot. I reckon it's best to ask what is he looking for before the pop =/.

Secondly to waileong:

What on earth...hey respond when its appropiate. DP didn't insult and slam the TS, what's your beef man?

Thirdly, to Canonised:

Man, I don't know about this, but why are you so subservient all the time? Humble is humble, but there are times I kinda wish you would take a stand if you disagree, even towards me! Good photography is not only by practise and skill, it's by motivation, backbone and the willingness to learn on your own! I don't think you want to a newbie for long right?

Fourthly, to student:

Hey doc, I don't know if its possible but maybe you and DP could sort things out. Alot of pple (including me ) observed you two are actually alike! Okay, more like 2 bull elephants, but I reckon if you two could reach an agreement you could change alot in this forum. We would hate to lose either one of you.

Fifth, to me:

Have to be very very careful not to sound like a know it all..esp when all the ppl here are old men and this bugger is only 25 years old..

Lastly to the threadstarter:

Yo, dude you can come back now. There's no more mousetraps set! Really!

waileong,

if you are gonna start a war in every thread that DP puts forth his opinions and "unhelpful" ways, then i suggest, either u ban urself, or get DP banned. becos if every portrait thread of CRAP IMAGES (like these are, yes i feel they are) a war ensues, i will personally beseech the mods to ban one of u. and if this thread is anything to go by, it would be u.

this model looks like zhu yin in some angle....

Maybe you guys can start a new thread: "the discussion between XXX with YYY etc" :bsmilie: put it as sticky... Interested people can come read...

Poor TS... He's innocent.. :dunno:
