Changing to canon!!

To TS: Don't get too caught up about changing bodies cause every brand takes turn to build a better camera. Invest in lens :)[/QUOTE]

Yah man Well said. As for me I am more interested in Lenses...... at least they last for years!
Its crazy out there, but then WE ARE ALL CRAZY about our toys.:)

Many times I also think to change system. 1st, thought to switch to Nikon because most of my buddies is Nikon user (my 400D actually a gift from my sister), and on that time thinking that Nikon give more pleasing IQ than my cam. 2ndly, tempted to switch to Sony A850 and their Zeiss lenses. But after some thinking, I found my desire will never satisfied, if I make switching, who knows on the future I want to make another move?
To TS: think 1st, do you really need FF. If yes, do you think change system can make your photography better (please bear in mind, you can't collect all lenses although Canon has more varieties in lenses). If yes, then proceed...

i dun need to collect all the lens it is just that a cam body is for me to use for yrs and for the lenses it is nt that i will buy all is just that i have more choices to choose from.
I am planning to shoot for events and wedding.

Hi guys i am deciding to change to canon 5D Mark II on June (most likely). Can i get some opinion from u guys about the cam whether the pros or the cons.
With Thanks
Weijing.

Do note the cost of camp jumping.. and the consequences..
When nt consider the D700 since u ard have the 50 f1.4?

As stated 'although d700 is cheaper and the build is better, i prefer canon because of the wider variety of lenses and is much cheaper then nikon. Just to quote another example nikon 70-200 = 70-160mm so what for sticking to nikon if they produce this kinda of things.'

i know in whatever ways to jump to other brand i will lose money but if i switch earlier i wun be losing much. IF nikon can produce d700 replacement and many other better FF lens such as primes and the VR III for 70-200mm i will consider to stay with nikon.

Or else switching to canon 5D2 on june will be my target for now.:)

frankly to me i'll go for the D700 over 5D2 if you don't need high pixel count. The 70-200 VR II has 70-160mm focal length only when you focus close-distance objects right? Canon has their 70-200 IS II as well, just announced last moth; who knows it might deliver 70-150mm only? :bsmilie:

i'm considering moving to canon as well, but only due to these several lenses.. 24f1.4 50f1.2 and 85f1.2

So what's the current market price of the 5dMII? And any idea how much this MIII will be when it comes out?

Guys, consider this... Canon has more experience with using CMOS sensors... Nikon only switched to CMOS sensors only a couple of years (2006 on the D200 body) ago. Nikon has been using CCD sensors for a long time.

Having done the Nikon to Canon switch 3 months ago from a D90 to a 5D2, I have my regrets, but have come to like Canon for what it is (and is not).

Pros:
  • Canon beats the shits out of Nikon in terms of awesome AWESOME prime lenses. For example, you want wide? There are a myriad of excellent fast primes. Want telephoto? The same.
  • Canon lenses are much cheaper, both brand new and secondhand. Canon bodies are overpriced but the cheaper lenses make up for the difference thrice fold.
  • L-lens GAS (could be a con, not too sure on this yet)

Cons:
  • The AF system on the 5D series is atrocious when comparing to Nikon's offering on even their entry-level DSLRs. You will curse and swear at the fact that the spread of AF points is useless and that all but the centre AF point works best. For example, on my lowly D40, I could choose any of the three AF points and use them perfectly. Don't bother with the 5D series. Just use the centre Af and recomposs.
  • Build quality of the 5D feels extremely cheap when compared to the price you have paid and compared to the Nikon equivalent (D700).
  • Lighting system. ETTL works but in my experience is years behind Nikon's ITTL both in terms of user-friendliness and function. Slap on a S400/600/800/900 on any Nikon DSLR and it will work as is in all program modes. Slap on a 430EX/580EX on any Canon DSLR and you have to fiddle with custom functions to make sure the blasted camera knows that there is a stupid external attached to its equally stupid hotshoe.
  • Stupid out-dated menus such as the burried settings within Custom Functions. Have fun decoding all that!

IQ is the same. Noise is the same to my eyes.

Stick to Nikon - not because you have invested in it, but purely because you already are familiar with the Nikon system. A head-first dive into Canon's system will only cause you frustration.

With that said, it took be a good 3 months to appreciate the 5D, 5Dii, 1DmIII and 1DsmII for what they were. I had to forget my Nikon ways and once I did, loved my Canon, in particular, the lenses (*hugs 24L, 50 1.4, 70-200L, 200L, 17-40L, 100L*).

The grass is always greener on the other side. The same applies once you've crossed over.

hey bro thx for the opinion of urs. Really appreciate a lot. Since u say this I may reconsider both. I am going to wait till June before I buy a new body. Maybe at that time canon will come out mark III. Haha. Let's wait and see then.

i know a few lenses,
esp the wide to mid tele zoom,
where the tele ends is not what its stated UNLESS,..
it is focusing at a distance.

the sigma 50-150 is one.
i had the chance of comparing it side by side with the Tokina 50-135.
when focusing near MFD, there is no noticeable difference between the 2.
the sigma 24-70 HSM is another.

anyway, did u try the canon's version together with the nikon?

btw, i m a canon user.
just don't want to see u switch becos of a lens,
esp one that u might not even buy.

no worries on that,
modern science unlike martial art,
is not a discipline but an acquired art.

No problem. I just wanted to let others know what I went through. If by luck I do swap my 1DsII for a D700, I'll be happy to just hunk down with a 70-200VR and a 50 1.4.

By June, the street price of the mkII will hopefully drop even further. And who knows, maybe a replacement D700 will drive down the price of the D700!

So what's the current market price of the 5dMII? And any idea how much this MIII will be when it comes out?

There is a locked thread with prices for all Canon gear here on CS. It should give you a rough estimate of the street prices for the mkII in Singapore.

As for the mkIII, who knows? If there is one, I hope it has less plastic but Canon have not been one to give users what they want/need.

Why wait till till June ...... don't you know a rumour is still a rumour. There will not be a MKIII announcement in June.

Just buy it now. :)

I am not as rich as u are. On June I will most probably have enought to fund for 5d2 and 24-70 2.8 so I am waiting till June to buy.

That's one of the valid reason why one would switch camp..... look at the lens you need and if the particular brand offer it (better still, at a "competitive" price)..... else, there is always a better body round the corner.... unless father open bank or print notes.... :dunno:.... can never finish comparing and "upgrading"....

Nikon now has a 24mm f1.4 now.

To TS, I'd rather stick to Nikon and get the D700 if I were in your shoes.
