CF card for 5DMKII

I went to sitex in the afternoon and the lower capacity cards had all been sold out, leaving the higher capacity still available, but the price was getting up there.

Think you are now confusing yourself. Video is less intensive than say shooting raw, so you don't need a fast card, if all you intend to do is capture video.

Hi 2evans,
But I also thought when you shoot raw, it is one shot (I am not referring to burst capture) and writing of this amount of info into the card is limited to just that shot. But for HD video, the amount of info to write to the card can be huge, so if the buffer of the 5DMKII (not sure how big) overruns, then the writing of info to the card is an issue if it cannot catch up with the incoming data.

Sorry, my knowledge is also rather limited in this aspect. Pardon me if I got it all wrong.
Cheers,

how much is a 60MB/sec extreme card cost?

Cheers,

Video size= 4.8MB/sec ?
Kingston write speed= 15-20MB/sec

--> The camera buffer will not be full.

shooting RAW file is another story though.

I use transcend 16gb 133x.

No problem taking full HD video...

Nemo's answer sums it up well. Video records, but the data flow is smaller than say shooting raw. So If you think of a tap, the video is like a slow flow of water, just need a large bucket to hold all the water, but shooting raw, is like turning the tap on full blast for an instant. Need a wide bucket so it can handle that large, intense bit of water. Clearer? :)

Hi 2evans,
I think I got it. Thanks a lot! Thanks to all who bothered to reply.
Cheers.

Hi,

Just to tag along the thread, anyone tried using Sandisk Ultra II for HD video on 5DII? Not that i have one (5DII i mean) but interested to know if my 8Gb Ultra II card can also work ok. I know there're alot of specs mentioned on compatibility but sometimes the best way to know is to really try the card/camera combi...

asking just in case i have the fortune to have someone buying me a 5DII as a present someday...:bsmilie:

While on the topic of CF card for 5dmk2, has anyone tried microdrive for 5dmk2? I picked up 2 pieces of 4GB Hitachi microdrive at the recent SITEX for like $8 each, not sure if it can be used.. but just bought and try since it's so cheap.... seems to work ok when I tested a few shots, but there is an Error 70 that appears when I try to review the images on screen. However, when I download onto my computer, it is readable.

HI Tortise,
I believe Sandisk Ultra II is about 15 MB/s write speed or lower. From what Nemo has said, it should be fine too. But really need to test out.

Satch,

I have never used or seen a microdrive before. It is like a thumb drive? Care to post a pic? 4 GB For $8 is really very cheap!
