@lsfchris, no one seem to have answered your question on the remote cord socket (I'm guessing you're referring to this when you said "PC sync"), and remote power socket in front of the flash.
These are used with a compatible external battery pack (e.g. SD-8A, SD-9) to shorten recycle time and give more flashes before the batteries need to be changed.
You said that you plan to shoot portraits and the occasional event or party.
I had the same requirement when I was shopping for a flash recently, and I got a used but mint condition SB-800 after evaluating the options. And an SD-8A as well, of course.
Plugging the SD-8A in gives me a recycle time of 1s or so, plus the promise of more flashes in between battery changes. This is important for event shoots ... you cannot say "hold that smile" while your flash takes 4-5s to recharge. Plus opportunistic shots are not captured.
I only use it occasionally as I'm a hobbyist, but I know that when I need the capability, it's there, and for not much more investment than getting something newer but lower end.
So I will advise you to get an SB-800 if you use iTTL, or if you want new and can't find an SB-800, go one up to the SB-900.
FYI I used to use (and still have) an SB-28 and an SD-8. That's what got me hooked on this fast recharge thingy, the SD-8 (and -8A) are small and light, you just pop them into your pocket and forget about them (well, if you can ignore the cord!).
