cant afford a 24-70mm and 28-70mm nikon len need alternative

Get the nikon afd 28-105 with built in macro, compact and light feature! Swiss Army knife! Sharpest lens ever! Will not break over 1k for sure.... However is not a f/2.8 lens. But if your work mostly deal with studio. This gem is definitely a keeper. Despite being unknown as a recommended lens for the current cameras like d800e and up. I've used it on the large pixel cameras and proven to be crisp.

I've had the AFD28-105 for years, beginning with film, and carried over to fx, and recently got a AFS24-120. Between the 2, I do get more keeper shots with the 24-120 than the 28-105, due mainly to the VR, but I find that the 28-105 gets me sharper images (and better IQ) than the 24-120. On top of that, you get macro capability thrown in as a bonus. (Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion, and you also need a little bit more patience and steady hands because it has no VR.) If you do find a good clean copy of the 28-105, you'll love it. as xylphz mentioned, it's a gem.

Personally i do not find the 28-105 that impressive. It is not bad of a lens, but there are many better options around.

The 24-85 vr is a good option too. Should have many selling after dekitting from d610 kits. Or for $300 or less, the non vr is a good catch too.

I have it felt that 35mm is not wide enough

That is the common thing said about this old pro lens. TS budget and extensive list of options provided by bros prompted me to include this dusty old jewel of a lens. Can be had for 300 USD, it is a 2.8 constant zoom, small, all metal construction, MIJ and made for many many years. Cheap...a whole lot of lens for the money. Couple it with a twenty or twenty something wide prime and then "not wide enough" doesn't matter anymore.

Do you consider Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG HSM?
Recently I just bought mine "Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG HSM" just above $1k. Beside that I do own a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 prime lens (bought from Japan Yodobashi).

Concensus is that the tamrom performs much much better.

ive the old afd28-70 f3.5-4.5 as well as the afd28-105 f3.5-4.5.

love this 2 on my d800e n df. nowadays prefer the 28-70 more due to size n ease of carrying.

lack of constant f2.8 doesn't bother me as when i use d800e, its either studio or landscape n when its shot using df, then the iso can be pumped.

both lenses are below sgd200 used each.

however there might b other better/newer alternatives that might be more expensive.

ts might wanna explore the newer options as old lenses are not everyone's cuppa.

ymmv n haf a nice sunday ahead!

That is a old lens. Local 2nd hand markets tend to price it ridiculously high. You will be better off with the 24-85vr. But you will not get constant f2.8 with either of these lenses.

This was my first Semi Pro lens many years ago!.... i took this one to Nepal 5 times and in all terrains and climbing to over 7000m also... this and the old 20mm 2.8D and 50 1.4D prime made a nice 3 lens combo for trekking

The thing i liked about the 24-85 2.8-4D was the close focusing..... its a matter of inches and had 1:2 Macro. Was very versatile lens frankly.

Prob will never keep up with Sensors exceeding 25Mpix though.

2nd-hand Tamron 24-70/2.8 is already below 1k and you say budget is below 1k. You only get focus breathing and lens flaring compared to Nikon but you also get Vibration Control

I own the 28-75 mm f2.8 tamron len n use to own the 50 mm f1.8g n 1.4d, I personally find the sharpness is on par n I'm still very satisfied till now, specially considerING the cost.

The only con is the af, beside that, there r nothing much to complain about
