Hi guys,

I was given a Canonet QL 17 GIII that has been sitting at the back of a cupboard since 1979. Lens has fungus, viewfinder fogged badly, seals all rotten, but shutter works fine. Meter works but I don't have the correct battery.

I was wondering if it's worth restoring this? Seems like it's not worth a lot 2nd hand.

Anyone familiar with this camera?

Thanks!
Ervine

pick up a better quality one here on cs..spotted someone selling it..think CLA it isnt cheap...

Hi Ervine.

I think used ones in good condition go for $150 - $200 range.

Seals are cheap and can be user replaced for a few dollars, but the bummer might be the viewfinder.

Why not contact Fatigue here on CS and see what he says/estimates?

The front Elements are a common issue on the QL17. You can use a 1.4V zinc air hearing aid battery and the meter will be fairly accurate unlike with a 1.5V LR44. The RF/VF can be cleaned. Seals are messy to do but not that hard. Your biggest issue would be the Lens glass. Have overhauled several GIII's (stopped counting at 10) I don't find them to be a major hassle to work on.

Ah... but the question is... is it WORTH overhauling?

Anyone has used the camera before?

If you are able to do the work yourself and or you can get it done for a reasonable cost then yes. The Only major problem I see is the lens issue. If you have to go looking for the glass it may be a cost issue.

It's an excellent performer. The Lens is sharp. The camera is fairly compact and well built.

I guess it's all down to how much the overhaul will cost then. For the price of an overhaul I might be able to get one that's nice and clean to start with.. ;p
