Canon shooter switching to m3/4

One big reason is because the G1X does not have a mirror box. Thus the flange focal distance is much shorter than the EOS DSLRs, allowing smaller lenses to be built. But a side effect of shorter FFD is light fall-off at the edges due to the angle which the light is hitting the sensor. That can be corrected by (expensive) micro-lenses, which Leica is using on its huge full frame (Kodak made) sensor.

2012 is going to be an interesting year in photography. First EOS 1D-X, then Nikon D4 and D800. Next thing you know, G1X and X-Pro1. I can't wait to see what else is in store.

The Pen Pro? ;)

I considered the X100. And did not buy it. It is too big. For me. Or I guess for anyone enjoying the m4/3 for its size.

Likewise, the G1X and X-Pro are just too BIG. Compare to m4/3. For those sizes, I would go back to dSLRs....

When the lens is retracted, the G1X is about the size of a Panny G3 with the 1.7 Pancake lens.

Canon is really boring... A souped up G12 in the form of G1X.

Posted the following under "Canon" as i was responding to a question to choose between the Canon 60D or 600D.... more apt to post it here ....

I upgraded from a 500D to a 60D with full gear... 70-300 IS L, 70-200 f4 IS L, 1.4x TC, 17-50 etc.. I love the 60D and all my gear but somehow found myself lugging a huge Vanguard bag with a tripod etc whenever I travel cos thats when I can really get all the unfamiliar shots I want...

I sold off my 60D and gear (and realized I never ONCE used the screen swivelled open and used the video mode only once to test)... because of sheer weight and all the heavy gear I had to lug along.

I am now happily settled with a micro 4/3 lumix GX-1 with all the same DSLR settings available via a dial juz like my 60D and via LCD, plus a range of lenses from 100-300 (effectively 200-600), 45-170, 14-42 and there are a range of prime lenses available with f below 2 to choose from!

Maybe question can be... 60D or 600D or micro 4/3?

hey same here, 500D to 60D and now GX1, but still keeping previous cameras because sometimes itchy still need to play with umbrellas and backdrops and wireless TTL flash...unfortunately M43 still cannot fill this aspect...

Can lah.. use continous lighting system.

That can be corrected by (expensive) micro-lenses on the sensor, which Leica is using on its huge full frame (Kodak made) sensor. That said, I don't understand why Canon wants such a long zoom lens on its "pro" G series camera. A 24-70mm f/2.8 equivalent would be ideal.

2012 is definitely an exciting year for photography. There are so many new models in the pipeline, I will have a really tough time deciding what to go for next. At this moment, the Fujifilm X-Pro1 looks mighty interesting. If it is able to overcome the slow AF and other reliability issues of the X100, and produce good image quality with the new experimental sensor, it's going to be a real hit. It's not cheap, but compared to a Leica M8 (APSC sensor) and the midrange M lenses, the Fujifilm system is almost a steal.

Another reason seems to be the sensor size ... therefore, unless there is some major breakthrough in the optics or the sensor side, the m4/3 approach appears to have a rather good balance in terms of trade off and advantages. Indeed it is going to be interesting for 2012 :)

Tot the olympus epl1, epl2 and ep3 could handle wireless TTL flash?

A bit hard to compare rite? To me, the Canon system is like the PC (e.g. serious, heavy and bulky but does almost everything), whereas the the m4/3 systems is mostly like the ipad (e.g. fun, light and sexy but comes some limitations) rite? :)

Just read on Gizmodo that the X-Pro1 is plagued by slow auto-focus. Even Fuji confirmed that it will be the same in the production model. I guess it's Micro-4/3 for me then (if I am switching from DSLR at all).

I thought G3 has decent offering for DSLR users who want to switch to M4/3. It looks like a small DSLR, but is around the same size as m4/3 cameras and comes with built in EVF. PLus its highly compact and has a good grip so users should be able to convert quickly from DSLR itself.

No disrespect to Fuji , I always get this feeling they are trying to make quick bucks through compromising on certain qualities and profiteering from photogs lust for old school designs and looks and the masses that are unwilling to get a Leica m9. But just my opinion ...

I am also a current Canon system user, my wife recently got me a gx1 with x lens, pan 20 and oyl 45 saying that I may not want to carry my gear with a baby coming. I found it is good enough of family and normal outing when a camera is good enough other than the Iphone. My canon setup like most here are for more serious work like birding, weddings and events.
I must say i like colors directly from current models like the 1dmk4 and 5DMKII is good with flash. The GX1 i have yet to use with flash.
I am happy with the 2 prime i have.

Overall nice setup but will still use my canon setup for serious work.

Would you ditch the Canon system totally if you didn't have to do "more serious work"? Meaning photography is purely for pleasure?

Perhaps you could consider m43 as a supplement rather than a complete replacement for now .... going forward it depends on how these manufacturers competes? I mean people have PC, laptop, tablet and smart phone at the same time these days and these devices some similar functionalities but typically used at different occasions / purposes ... of course one could want all the power, functionalities as well as the choice of portability etc. all at one time, which i guess will take some time to materialize ...

Slow focusing? Pity ... is a good attempt ...

While the question is not directed at me, I belong to the group who treats photography purely as a hobby. My first was a 300d, followed by 20d and finally 5dii. While I ever helped out at friends' weddings, I never got paid before.

While the gx1 can take excellent photos, the pictures that u can take with a full frame is something u can not achieve with a m43. I could tell the difference when I upgraded from a 1.6 crop to FF. Hence, a 2.0 crop means the pictures are further away from FF quality.

I presume u r referring to ISO performance?

Well, I used to own a D700, now with a GX1. I started to realize having a camera you can carry everywhere with you and putting up with a bit of noise is a higher priority rather than a big bulky camera with good noise performance. I know everyone has their preference, so I'm just saying.
