No lah, S3 is NOT a DSLR at all. It is a high end consumer compact model, or prosumer (professional consumer) model.

Based on my rather limited understanding, I think the technical construction of a DSLR is very different. You use the view finder to view through the lens. For our S3, this is not the case. There are other differences but I am not sure. DSLRs also tend not to have these frills like movie mode, LCD preview etc.
Its not a prosumer.... no hotshoe, no RAW (Insert real men do it RAW joke here). dSLRs are a very different camera. This is a good explanation of the difference.

Wah.. you mean the S3 does not even qualify as a prosumer model? Must the prosumer model have hotshoe and RAW mode? Canon had previously marketed the PowerShot S series as Prosumer models. On their website, the S series was under the group "Prosumer Models". Now, I realise the name has been changed to "Performance winner". If indeed, the S3 does not qualify as a prosumer model, then Canon's lineup now has no prosumer models at all.

I was under the impression that many reviews classified the S3 as a prosumer model. I just checked, some of them still do, but others call it a ultra zoom camera, like what cerebrus said.

For more information, you can read up at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dslr. Well, this article calls the S series SLR-like cameras.

it doesn't really matter. as long as it is a good camera, whether you call it consumer or prosumer doesn't matter.

Hi guys wanna check whether wat type of FAT setting u guys use for the SD card...
My current SD factory default is FAT, any different if format to FAT 32?

I think most use FAT32. Actually you do not have to worry over this because when you pop your newly purchased SD or CF card into the camera, it's best that you use the camera to format the card properly before you start shooting. BTW, you have to dig into the menu to select Formatting. (It's different from the Erasing mode.):)

I got to agree with that!

I think some DSLR got LCD preview.

Anyway, DSLR means Digital SLR, which means it works like SLR. SLR can change lens while S3 cannot (can only add converters). DSLR CCD is 35mm, imitating the SLR film, while compact camera (including S3) has smaller CCD physical size....therefore, the DOF of compact is generally deeper....not easy to take pics with shallow DOF. Also the reason why up to a certain threshold of pixel number, the bottleneck of the pic quality is limited by the CCD size....

D/SLR can also fix external flash on a hotshoe while S3 dun have loh....

But since I haven't even master the prosumer, no point getting a DSLR lah......but I do have access to my brother's SLR, but then again, it is expensive to use SLR on the photo developing cost......

Hi, FAT is the older system which can only support up to 2GB card. If you card has larger capacity, u need FAT32 to make full use of it. S3 uses FAT32 (this means it can take more then 2GB card).

Yah, actually Prosumer is a new marketing gimmic terms made up from Professional-Consumer, which means it is a comsumer camera with close to professional functions......I think there is no fixed definition on what features a prosumer must have.....just like car, MPV used to be a 3 row seats vehicle, but now even a Sirion/Matrix/Ignis called themselves a MPV......

True.. but somehow, a long zoom compact or consumer camera does not sound quite as nice as a prosumer camera. I have been telling people it is a prosumer camera. Maybe now I will tell them it is a SLR-like consumer camera? :)

I just tell them its my toy camera. Who cares what it is called, so long as you get nice pics its fine. :bsmilie:

Hi guys, i bought my S3 today afternoon for $715 (free 512 card, carrier which include cleaning kit and tripod) . Price stated is b4 GST. Now playing wif the camera.

Last but not least, do remember to add me to the list

Gd Day guys, I got my S3 as planned, paid 760 for it, came with 7 in 1+bag+512Mb Kingston and GP 2100 battx4 and charger. Bought a Sanyo charger instead, anybody want to buy my GP charger?

Do add me in the list too, cheers!

Finally got my S3 tonite. $717 (excl GST) from MS Color via e-quote.

This is a heavy bugger.... compare to my previous Konica Minolta Z2.
But then, the S3 feels more solid, compared to the toyish Z2.

$750 to $760 seems to be price still. But my friend claims she was offered $735 inclusive of GST by Song Brothers at Funan.

Welcome!
