I am using AVG 8.5 free version now.
Scan my card just now, seems like it is not affected by the virus.
Not so sure whether it is really not affected or not.
Anyone can detect that virus using AVG 8.5 free version?

My gf and I are using this as well. Performed a scan but no virus found (thankfully) but my gf's sister SD card kena the virus, found and removed via AVG 8.5.

I guess I was damn lucky to read this forum before actually plugging back my SD card into my computer (THANK GOD FOR M$'S REALIZATION OF THEIR AUTOPLAY STUPIDITY!).

Here's my take on the competition:

Personally speaking, I sucked. Big time. I should've not spent the $10 going into the competition, knowing that others are having it better than me. I should've spent more time improving my shots and master my Canon EOS 450D. I dread the moment when I realized that I am just another guy/girl with camera. My shots aren't great. My composition needs to be worked on further; I still had not grasped my camera's intimate settings better, and my submission of photos could've been better substituted with other pictures that, in my opinion, should've been submitted instead!

[/rant]

('Twas my first Canon Photomarathon competition for me, and I have no idea if this will be my last competition – God willing, I hope to participate again next year.)

Anyway, I cemented my belief in myself that I can approach to people better (+1 for a relative shut-in), I was able to appreciate the "filtered" effects on my camera (well, I only played with my "sepia"/monochrome shots today), and – for a starter – "snooped" myself into a certain Idol session somewhere in Singapore.

Actually, it was kinda fun taking this competition. Rain may dampen what we may originally conceive (whenever the theme was mentioned, I just conceptualize the image that I wanted to take – which is bad if I only practised taking candid shots), but improvise.

Anyway, I've taken a look at the finalists from the first 2 themes; I have to admit that those pictures are really fantastic to look at. Which reminds me.............

Hi, the most important thing is to have fun, this is my first time joining too and I personally like you, don't think the pics I took are great (they are just normal) and my team being all 1st timers didn't really brainstorm enough on the creative aspect but we have a great time together. I definitely will be going back next year and with experience gained from this year participation, I will be better and more prepared (for the fun!). ;)

I think there were similar misgivings about the results for last year's Photomarathon results.

yeah i saw them online and thought to myself " wow the standards are so low , i might have a chance!"

but after yesterday , i realise that there were numerous great photos , just that those chosen are really lousy.

i really hope canon does something about the judges as i want to go again next year , but i wouldn't want the ending to be like this again. it would be so much better if i didn't win a prize but at least can admire the winners for having truly nice and creative shots , instead of sheer luck.

My opinion but it does look the Student category is much better then the Open catergory. I find the Students to be more imaginative while the Open are more on the safer and tried/tested photos which lacks that creative spark.

but whatever it is, a win is a win regardless. Congrats.

*Just a small note, there have been reports of users memory card getting infected by a virus after uploading the pics for the photo marathon.
Its this one.

Norton killed it just moments after i inserted the memory card into the card reader.

Hi everyone,

I see everyone has problem with virus.

You should bring a netbook and USB. You need to buy McAfee USB. Because you don't want to get a virus.

1) When you taken photos, transfer to netbook then again transfer to USB memory to security. It is safe your photos. If McAfee has already an installed in an USB memory, you don't need to get virus.

CF memory card, SDHC card have not secure. Above one mention is good way.

Maybe should just lock and protect the SDHC card before passing to the Canon staff, at least this way the virus can't be written into your SD card.

BTW, where can I view the winning photo online. I leave early, so like to see the winning shot.

Can but.... Virus can enter your memory card.

For those who attended the canon photo marathon, what do u think about the photos that was selected in the finalist?

Some might fit the theme but it doesn't catch the eye at all. There are more photos that was displayed on the slide as well as photos that was shared among each other that was submitted seems to be much better.

Wonder how was the photo chosen? Based on feel? Know the person? Relative? First few photos chosen?

I wonder.....

If you had done checks on the judges, you would have found out that they are professional photographers who are relatively well known in their fields of expertise. Granted that being a professional photographer does not necessary equate to great aesthetics, being able to thrive in the business for more than 5-10 years says a lot about their understanding of the art of photography.

On a general note, when professional photographers judge competitions, they are not just looking for an image that catches the eye, they are looking for the participant to understand and execute the idea well. Thus, an image might not have a compositional oomph, but if it demonstrates a strong idea, it will merit points.

Overall, in some of these competitions, the organizers are trying to move away from the traditional photo salon style where aesthetics and technical execution played a major role.

They announced a missing CF card left in the print booth around 8PM, you might want to simply send an email to Canon via their website.

Thanks my friend ! ;)

I scanned my CF card for errors and viruses, fortunately nothing found. :D

No viruses on our CF and SD cards as well... I did notice that they don't eject the cards like they used to the past 2 CPM events, though.

I didn't stay till the last theme result is out, but for the first two themes, did any of you notice that those who got shorlisted are mostly shots that are:

- very literal/traditional interpretation of the themes
- with people in it
- shot on the street/public places

And shots that shows alternative/out-of-the-box/creative interpretation and still life or abstract shots don't seem get chosen?

It might be all subjective, just what I perceived.

I totally agree. The student who won the Best of Show, his winning shot (the little girl doing ballet) is totally blur. It isn't even a panning shot of motion blur shot!

The group of us were like "WHAT?! THIS PHOTO CAN WIN?" when the photo of the 2nd winner for togetherness was shown. It was like complete blackness la.

And moreover, if you noticed, all the winners are guys. :/

I really prefer the Canon Photomarathon I had 2 years ago where we had chicken essence, ice-cream and cereal drinks. Moreover, the people at the downloading station 2 years ago were Canon staff, while this year's one is teenagers hired by the event organiser. (My friend, who is a Canon staff, told me that when I asked for job lobang.)

But on the side note, we can just take the winning shots and judging as crap because they only took 2 hours to choose the 20 best shots out of 1400 entries.

This competition is starting to fail badly, especially the emcee.

Will most likely not join again. :thumbsd:

I didn't take part time year due to pending assigments however, participating in any photo competition is just like buying lottery tickets and you begin to suspect whether the system is fair when you didn't win . Stop speculating and learn from the winners, improve yourself and try again.

The ballerina did not even win a prize in this theme

Why dont you make an effort and walk to the wall instead of complaining? Maybe the projector fails the picture

Different gender compete on a level playing field. So? What is your point?

So you expect to be spoonfed and get more goodies with your entry and then you can glorify the sponsors? At least they have enough staff on hand to help out at the downloading station to speed things up

But on the side note, we can just take the winning shots and judging as crap because they only took 2 hours to choose the 20 best shots out of 1400 entries.
Crap? Why not you post up your entries so we can make the judgement for you. Who knows your entries are crap that they are not selected.

This competition is starting to fail badly, especially the emcee.
Since you ask for a job lobang, go and call your friend, so you can be the emcee next year.

Will most likely not join again. :thumbsd:
Yea, stay home so the sponsors and judges will be saved from your sarcastic comments.

Ooops, this is your first post. Are you being sore? Troll in the house?

OT: What does "kena" & "lobang" mean?

I saw familiar faces on the stage and won't be surprise that they won the competition as their images always good.

BTW, the guy in black in the center looks familiar. Official photographer?
