Canon offers locking mode dial for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D

Whether you need it or it is worth to change the mode dial are very subjective. My concern is whether the service is available in Singapore and how much will be charged. If any bros got info, please update us. Thanks in advance.

How about I go to CSC, tell them I am not going to change and give me back US$110/-instead... :bsmilie:

Bro be gentle on your camera, you mean hit so hard and so many time it go off .
Happens all the time on my 5d mk1 too.

Canon really should realise some people actually bring our cameras to rough places. I find it quite ridiculous to always have to fiddle with the mode dial or on/off switch every time i walk through a crowd :(

Even if Canon does it for free, it's a no-no for me. I've never ever had an accidental mode change on my 7D. In fact, the locking mode dial was the most irritating feature of all when I tried out the 60D, it gets in the way and slow things down-definitely something you don't want when you have to work fast.

100 USD is a very steep price to pay for this. Is it labour intensive to change?

I don't think it's a design problem. Canon possibly / probably had a number of request from users to find a way to lock the dial.
Based on the posts I've read so far the lack of a dial is not a major issue.
I agree with another member's opinion that placing a lock will only add another step - and this will reduce one's response to taking great instant pics.

This is an annoying dial mode button , why need to exchange ? don't understand .

You mean send your 60D to CSC and return (change back) the non-locking dial and ask for $110 USD in return.:bsmilie:

Personally, not facing the problem, so no need.

But its good that Canon gives such options to people that needs it, rather than forcing you to buy a new camera. Hope they can give more such optional upgrades.

i sold my 60D and back to 7D because i don't like the locking mode dial.. now they are asking me to pay! forget it canon... haha

Had many instances when the mode dial turned unwittingly on my old 7D. Now that I've replaced the 7D with 60D, no more issue. Obviously, Canon recognize it's their design flaw... but why are customers paying for Canon's mistakes?

I think design flaw customer need to pay.

Manufacturing problem will be replace FOC. Remember the 5D mirror that drop off?

Why not canon use 'harder to twist' component for the dial? Still can use 2 fingers to change the mode.

Anyway, i never encountered this...

I am wondering whether they will modify all future production of these 2 models to have the locking mode dial

Good news for some and bad news for some.

Maybe an extra (PARTS) function to disable the locking function and offer $100USD to replace again:bsmilie:

locking mechanism is a definite no-no for me. will be too slow to switch between modes. i alternate between M and Av quite often. just imagine i need to press additional button.....

Seriously? Wow, how cool is that to be able to upgrade just because of a button. I just assumed you wanted to upgrade when switching to 7D.

never had such a problem so will pass.

TBH, this option is not going to be for everyone but isn't it good to know that you have this option if you wanted it? I say you rock Canon!

My fren just changed his (7d), cost $159

No no no... Mine's a 7D... I mean I might go to CSC and tell them I will forgive them about the dial button thingy... Just refund me US$110 will do :)
