Canon Malaysia reduced its RRP, prices for lens & bodies are dirt cheap now in MY!

Nonsense. It has nothing to do with GST.

Even if you take the street prices of lenses from HK or even USA/Japan and add 7% GST, the prices in SG are much higher.

And I'm sure shops which sell grey sets like DD Electronics charge GST and have to pay GST on the imports, but they are still able to sell cheaper compared to local stock.

Prices for many goods, not just camera gears, have been higher in SG than many countries for years and years, even before GST was implemented. Either one or more middlemen is making very good profit, or cost of doing business like rent is very high compared to other places, but then HK has very high rent also.

Another possible reason is because singapore's dollar has been gradually appreciating. But retailers here are pocketing the savings and refusing to reduce prices in tandem.

The malaysian option seems great. I drive in there all the time. Claiming warranty there for me not a problem at all. I never knew malaysian prices were so good, i always assumed they were more expensive than singapore for anything electronic, thanks to the OP for telling us about it

Does anyone here know what is the current street price of the 5Dm2 body only in JB?

Amy recommended shop in JB selling cheap Canon bodies and lens? Please share their shop name and location, will be going there soon so might as well check it out first. Thanks!

The Singapore dollar was as strong as S$1.40 to US$1.00 way back in the mid 1990s, then weakens after the 1997 Asian financial crisis but has come back over the years. Yet through all these ups and downs, prices remain stubbornly higher than other places, so I am not sure how much currency strength plays a role here. No matter, this is very good news for Singaporeans. Either SG retailers will start losing business to MY counterparts or they will smart up and reduce their prices to remain competitive; bringing them closer to what HK and US photographers have enjoyed for years.

I will say #2 and #4 are . I will personally avoid #1 and #3.

It is true that when you are at Plaza Angsana, try to maintain a low profile. That place does not look safe, so if can, go in group. Leave ASAP after you buy. BTW parking is RM$1 nett only

Anyway, the police station is just next to Plaza Angsana. But you won't see any policeman in that shopping center :bsmilie:

Went to Johan before! My relative knows the boss there! I highly recommend your go there. Although it's a bit far from causeway, of course ur must know the way :)

Last time I bought a 18 to 200mm lens and 430Ex II flash for a very good price.

Thanks Shah, was hoping it would be a little less than that though. its only about 200+ bucks savings.

The employees are good, the boss is BEST! I got to say this shop gets my vote among all shops in JB. Bought a few lenses there at price cheaper then DDE and with 3 years Canon warranty (last year)!

Like what many mentioned, I think the only set-back is the location of this shopping center. Don't really feel safe there.

$200+ savings is quite alot liao bro, or maybe it is to me who earn peanuts :bsmilie: If you buy a couple of lenses together, the savings is quite substantial.

Afraid of theft?? Funny.
Nothing to be afraid of. My friends/cousins/relatives told me that, as long as you know how to behave your mouth and attitude, you'll be fine.
I have a lot of friends out there who always going out shooting and just sling their camera over their neck. Me too!
Simple, do not show off. 

Meetoo photo is on 2nd floor. You can see right after you go up the escalator. When visiting plaza angsana it will be wise to park at the open air car park in front of the food courts. Try not to park at the multistory carpark. Also, remember your steering lock and turn your wheel all the way to one side before locking.

Have fun!

I think that's what "KS" people like me will do too, I always park in front of the main entrance near the Exit to flyover.

Anyway I may be making a trip in next week weekday in the afternoon. Will update again.

would anyone be interested to organize a group buy or group trip to malaysia??

I'm tempted to get 5D2 this time round...has been waiting for like forever to get it...hmmmm...
