hmm.. y nt consider e sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5? gd range to haf.. decent price. great optical quality for e price u pay..
was decidin on gettin dat until i saw e sigma 24-60 f2.8.. but dat is discontinued.

an alternative wld be e EF 28-135 IS but u nid e wide side.. so, juz get dat and bring ur kit lens. :bsmilie:

I think they are considering an "all-rounder" lens.

A cousin of mine has solely 350D and Tamron 18-200mm and he feels that it's good enough for him.. "No need to change lens.... why you want to incur dust.... why you want to bring so many lens out for what?" was what he said.

We had many debates over this... I had my fair bit of "why don't you get a prosumer instead since it'll cover a super long range with optimized quality?"

So to genehifi, after testing your options, just go with what your heart feel at the end of the day.

Thanks Hoky for sharing you experience and opinion. What you said makes a lot of sense. After reading all the wonderful advice by everyone, I've decided to use the 400D kit lense first, get more experience and later decide on the zoom. This will also give me some time to save $$$$ for the new lense. Will probably consider the Tamron 18-250mm too.
I love this forum.

Tamron 18-200 is a good lens also...
wow, 18-250 waiting for it
haha

No problem... maybe one day we can go for photoshoots together.

The gazillion x zooms never quite impress me, remember the reason that prime lenses still exist despite the emergence of the hyperzooms. I've used Sigma 18-125 and it is very decent, I'll probably get it or the 17-70, but not anything with more extreme range.

shorter range and prime lens exist for a good reason. quality of lens and many factors that govern the IQ of the end photo.

Sigma has a new 50-150mm F2.8 or Tamrons 18-250mm ;)
