If you are the ONLY photographer, then u better arm yourself with a backup body. Just in case the 350D freeze up and fail....not forgeting bring extra flash unit too.

Yeah, 2 body, one with 17-40L and another with 135mmF2L. Did a shoot with this combination and is great!

your background will be quite dark, shadows will be harsh. depends on your style.

i shoot at iso 800 to 1600, f1.4 to f2.8 (depends on lenses), flash and flashess (depends) shutter will hover between 1/15 to 1/100. Av mode.

noise, i will not worry if you are using 350D, really. Again, that works from person to person.

echo. i just did a flashless wedding mini series and it turns out quite good. no harsh shadows cast by flash and dark BG. u will be surprised, i used only one lens at 1.2 only up to ISO1000 with a 1st generation CCD :) i leave the wide angle to another photog

perhaps u would like to consider rental instead of purchase?

my 2 cents only.

Hi! Tks for all the advise. I have my 580 Flash and seems like 17-40 f/4L is the choice. Any advice if during the dinner , if i set the speed to 80, iso 400 and f/4 will it be ok? I will bouce my flash to the ceiling with the white card up. I will try not to go lower than 80 as scare the pictures will be blur, iso 800 the pictures will have noise. Pls advise. Tks!
Juz a question, its ur first time doing it?

Utilise all ur knowledge of bounce flash, aperture & shutter speed. Use ur instincts as well. Lighting conditions varies between different events and ballrooms. Its hard to give a single 'one-size-fits-all' setting that fits across an entire range.

An advice:
The 17-40L is quite sharp wide open. Utilise it to ur advantage of having a reasonably wide constant aperture.

ISO400 sounds ok for a dim ballroom. I usually shoot from a range of ISO200 all the way to ISO800. Its not say that the couple's gonna blow ur photos to A0 size and they've got eyes of an eagle. Why worry abt the noise at ISO800? Or do u not have faith in the DigicII processor?

Shutter speed of 1/80 sounds too fast to me. Typically my shutter speed goes to about 1/40 or 1/30. If ur basic technique's there, why worry about shooting below the speeds of 1/80? :dunno:

You said "If ur basic technique's there" mah... so shoot slightly above that to play safe lor

i aslo use 17-40 plus my 580 most of the time ..

even i got 2 more "L" in my bag ..

Wont there be lotsa noise using ISO 800 , 1600 ? Pictures turned grainy .. :dunno:

True, pictures will turn out grainy. However in some cases, using a high ISO allows you to capture more of the background lighting. It is also to reduce the power of the flash so that it is not too harsh.

To me, a properly exposed picture is more important than the noise.

Nobody mentioned the Canon 16-35 f2.8.

So now I have to ask: Is this is a suitable lens for wedding?

Yup. Range is about the same at 17-40L but with a 1-stop advantage. I would prefer this over the 17-40L any time if my wallet permits

Definitely....but too expensive. The 17-40 will suffice.

Thanks for the replies.

In addition, an 85mm would be rather sharp and useful for low light shots and not too long like the 135. Both 85's should be sharp enough for some cropping if necessary. :)

I've tried before both the 85mm f/1.8 and f/1.2L, both are very sharp but of cos the L one have slightly better colour contrasts.

Tks eveyone for all the advise. Was told that Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8 also quite good leh. Its cheap lor. What do you all think? Btw, I bought myself the 135mm f/2L, like this lens as i can shoot @ a distance and the f/2. Ofcouse it will not be suitable for wedding but i believe that there are still some shots which i take take with this lens. Aim to buy myself a marco lens, a portrait lens & a wide angle lens for full collection so can take landscape, portrait, sports and etc. Any advise.

My lens list below:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8
Canon 75-300mm f/4 USM
Canon 28-105mm f/3.5
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5
Canon 135mm f/2L

Actually im not the actual photographer of the day. My friend ask me to take for them but it's too pressure for me and further more, their wedding package include the actual day photographer so after considering for quite some times, I ask them to engage him and i just tag along. I will be an extra. Ha...ha.... then i can buy myself the 135mm f/2L and the wide angel at a later part lor. LOL

the 135mm is a great lens to use for weddings, provided you have the space to work around it!

If you are not the main photographer then you can be free to be more adventurous. In that case the 135 would actually be great for candid shots. But I think you will need a good wide-angle in any case.

For Wedding Dinner, I recommend 24mm; for outdoor, I recommend 70mm onwards. And I suppose u will be using flash (?), so f/4 should not so much of a problem already.

Hi Pals!

I will be taking wedding photography for my friend next month and don't know which lens to have so need all your advise. The most headache part is during the dinner as u know that it will be quite dim in the restaurant and low speed may cause the pics to be blur so need all your tips and advise.

Currently, I own 350D and have Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens but thinking of having another one. I'm thinking of 85mm f1.8, 24-105mm f/4L , 70-200mm f/4L or 135mm f/2L as they are cheaper compare to 24-70mm f/2.8.

70-200mm f/4L is because it can zoom but if indoor or during the dinner, I'm afraid that f/4 will have problems when low lighting.

135mm f/2L i like is the f/2 stop but the problem i scare is the range 135mm. Scare the wall is too close behind me.

85mm f/1.8 i like is also the f/1.8 stop but if the couple march in or on stage, I can't zoom in for close up snap.

24-105mm f/4L :It is almost similar to my Tamron Lens but i like is the red rubber band on the lens as u know own a L lens is everybody dream. Ha...ha....

So how?? Pls advise. Thank you!

for lense you mentioned above.. ermm..

imo, lense at 24mm (for your 350d) is probably not wide enough for wedding events as there's lotsa indoor, groups and table shots...

either a 17-40 L, 17-85 IS, 18-55, 16-35 L should be more suitable as wedding AD lense.....
