Canon G7 - Dust in the lens :(

My G7 was with Canon for about 1 week. So far, I am very happy with the results. As what you mentioned, it all based on your luck as who is the technician attending to the camera.

As requested, below is the pic showing the pale white spot. It is boxed in red for easy reference.

PS: The location and size of the spot is not fixed. Some photos shows big spots while others, like the one shown above, is quite small.

My spot looks exactly like yours, but dark, darker than the surrounding :( And only shown f/5.6 or smaller. Will go back to Canon next week, to clean it... AGAIN... :(

Dear all: Just wrote an email to Canon Japan HQ urging them to start inspection of this phenomenon and provide official statement for the cause and cure. Searching the Japanese forum, there are quite a few cases reported as well.

Currently different local Canon has been reacting differently trying to solve this dust issue. Some of them replace the G7 with new one while some provide free of charge cleanup. But so far this is just handled per user requests and taken as special cases for particular users only.

Obviously repeating the cleanup shouldn't be an option for compact camera G7!!!

Japan has holidays this week. Feedback can be expected in early next week (hopefully).
Will call them when necessary. No clue yet how they would react to this request. Will keep you posted.

Thanks Submarine! Waiting for good news from Canon :)

Canon JP replied. They want to discuss the feedback with related departments internally first, asking me to be patient for further developing.

Yesterday a staff from Canon Service Center Sgp called me regarding the dust, he also has reported this issue to headquarters, so he said better wait for a while before I send my camera for re-cleaning.

I've been using my G7 for the past month, so far haven't noticed any dust showing up in the pictures. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, do update us on Canon's solution to the problem. If there's a recall to rectify the issue, I'm sure most users will send in theirs.

From my experience, if spots are visible, usually the dust is on the sensor itself.

I had a dust problem the other day on my 30D. At first I thought it was the lens, so I cleaned both front and rear elements thoroughly and shot another test shot. The spec was still there. After switching lenses, the spot was in the same place.

Dust on/in lenses usually don't appear unless they're HUGE specs. Visible specs are usually a sign that dust is on the sensor itself.

Hope this helps.

For your case, the spot will be visible regardless the lens aperture. For my case, only visible on small aperture. Confirm by Canon, it is on the lens element near the sensor. Dust on the lens that is far from the sensor usually not visible.

Forgot to mention it only appears from f/8 or f/11 onwards. :) Anyway, since Canon confirmed it then I hope they will rectify the issue soon.
