Canon G11 or S90

Well the less times you do it, the less chance? Plus in between dives sometimes on a rock boat or a dark place not suitable for delicate work? you get the drift. :nono:
That's why u/w photographers prefer camera batteries to last at least a day's worth of diving to save the hassle. And that was one of the big complaints of the G9 compared to the G10. The G9 was a very popular camera in it's time, the biggest complaint was the battery only lasted 2 dives or so.

yaya ... G7 also sucks!!
depend on usage too!! sometime only last 1.5 dive!!
so no choice must change if know it's going to the limit.
sure agree less change mean less chance to get flood ...

Hi there,

i read from other threads that the buyback program is only valid for dslr cameras, not prosumer cameras. i will need this camera as i'm leaving overseas for work. none the less, i'll give it a try tomorrow, will head down to vivocity later to check out with canon staffs. and drop by at marina square to check things out as well... :)

i'm also interested in getting 1+2, 1+4 years warranty. it cost $70/$90 (direct canon) and $200+(agents) respectively..

i think there was a thread that someone was given $595 for S90 in the program but it was out of stock till end of month (that thread was 2 weeks ago).

Do update me.... i have a Canon EOS 750 to "give up".

Sorry folks but I changed my mind on getting the G11 or S90 cos it only records standard video (640x480). My current G9 can record high res video (1024x768) which I need for underwater videography.
On battery lifespan, it has never been a huge problem... jus change after 2 dives.
ALWAYS TEST U/W HOUSING IN WATER 1ST BEFORE SINKING INTO THE DEEP BLUE ;)

I tried the G10 and found that the battery is not bad, I remember that after 2 dives, battery is still enough! most likely for the 3 dive... when are u guys getting the G11 and case? i still deciding the ikelite or canon casing, price too much a difference!!! I wondering the canon casing quoted by ms color, do i need to get in a package to get the 280 price?

The G10's battery life is rated to 400+ shots i believe. Big improvement over the G7/9 cameras.

actually, might not be worth it getting extra warranty for anything more than 2 years. chances are, you'll be tempted to buy a new camera long before that!

Hi i-link, you can purchase the u/w housing separately from ms color but in cash. if you are really keen, get it fast cos stocks are low.

what the big big difference for a canon n an ikelite casing? what can be done to the ikelite that canon cannot do?

I used to dive with Canon S80 which battery (even original ones) needed to be changed after every dive as it would go flat halfway in the 2nd dive. So I would suggest to go for Canon Powershot series with 4AA batteries which would last the whole day. Get Imedion or Sanyo Eneloop batteries with Maha chargers. Get a strobe and dive lights which also run on AA batteries then the charger and batteries could be synchronised & you need less spares on the same trip.

400 shots might be possible if shooting through viewfinder; if shooting through LCD, then the mileage should drop.

If you invest on Ikelite accessories such as red filters (useful for shallow waters & bright sunlight), external wide angle/macro lens, then they can still be used directly on another Ikelite housing if you buy in future. TTL can be done through the hot shoe.

For Canon housings, the lens barrel of the housing may change, eg in the past it was round, but now it is oval. So the external lens will need to have another adaptor to fit the new mount. No TTL.

Hope this helps.

fox, thanks for telling me the difference, so if i'm going for long run into u/w photography, i should get the ikelite casing right? lol, si bei ex, think tomorrow i shall go down oceanicfocus to take a look on the casing, hopefully not tooooo big! anyone going to get the ikelite casing? lol

So far, I have used Canon Ixus V2, A95 and G7 with their respective Canon's underwater casing. Ixus V2, which is 6 - 7 yo, has the worse track record. I need to change battery after 2 dives. However, changing battery is not that difficult because there is only 1 O-Ring to maintain for all of Canon's casing. Just rub silcon all over the O-Ring and you are good for your next dive.

By far, I think A95 is the best. Not only does the batteries last for more than 4 dives, AA-sized batteries are readily available. Canon G7's rechargable battery is good for 4 dives too and recharging takes about 1 - 2 hours. However, all these is only true if you shoot like me, maximum of 80 - 90 shots per dive, average of about 250 - 300 shots a day. All shots taken with flashes. Forgot to add, I usually turn off display (Preview is also off) rather than turn off camera when i am not shooting.

Maintenance of the underwater casing is also simple. Just drip the casing into fresh water and press each buttons. After dive or for battery change, rinse the casing in fresh water, dry it, oil the O-Ring and you are ready for future dives.

If you do not want to keep buying new cameras and housing every now and then, then Ikelite housing & the best within the budget (below DSLR) would be a good investment. Canon Powershot SX1 would be a good choice. Runs on 4AA, able to shoot RAW & HD video too.

thanks for all the advise, i just got my G11 from ms color, $799 with 2 x 8G, screen protector!
still thinking should get ikelite or canon original casing, not getting so early unless I going for a dive.. btw ms color dont have stock for the canon original casing, need to pre order.

canon@SITEX quote

canon G11 S$855 (foc 3 x 8 Gb card, one pc bag, one tripod)
u/w casing--"i donch know when got stock" unquote.
Am interested to get the G11 and the U/W casing. My first u/w cam. I wonder if the price now is still as quoted?

I was emailing with Oceanic Focus today and apparently they have stopped selling the WP-DC35 for the S90 and only sells Ikelight casing from now on. Anyone knows anywhere else I can find the WP-DC35?

Cheers!
