Heres my first night shutter pictures with Canon 450D and standard kit lens.

Highway in Norway, Oslo

Taken outside the window of my apartment in Norway, Oslo

Any of you experienced guys have some kinda standard setting for taking pictures of city lights / skys during night / day ?

Im going to Florida in a month, would like to get some good photos there of buildings and landscape, night lights / etc.

I only got the standard kit lens, any suggestions ?

Night shots usually go with a tripod. ISO set at 100 and stop down your aperture and long exposures.

With long exposures and small apertures setting (i.e. f8 and beyond), you can get those flares on any lenses including kit lenses. Tripod is needed of course.

You have to ask yourself what type of subjects you like to shoot. Landscapes, portraits, events?

I shot with the kit lens for about 2 months before I spent on two more lenses in 50mm f1.8 II and 55-250mm. Now, together with the kit lens, I am covering from the wide 18mm to tele 250mm.

Say, if you like to take landscapes a lot, spent on wide angle lenses such as Canon EF-S 10-22, Tokina 12-24 or even a fisheye. But usually all these UWA lenses are pretty expensive. If you want to get a L, 17-40 is a good choice and it actually can replace your kit lens just that it lacks IS.
