noob question: many peeps own those 50mm fixed lens at maybe say f1.4~1.8.
understand that the lower the aperture go, the deeper the depth of field?? (correct bo?)
so...what does the 50mm actually mean neh?

does it mean you can achieve the best effect with an object 5cm away from the lens??
the depth of field has to do with the things behind (or sometimes in front) the subject in focus so the bigger the aperture the more blurry the background is.

The focal length of a lens determines the magnification at which it images distant objects. (from wikipedia) This means that longer focal lengths (eg 500mm) magnifies far images more. the effect depends on composition & exposure not so much on the distance of the subject from the lens

i think i get what you mean. but just to reiterate in simpler form,
f1.4 (big aperture) = very blur background.
f3.5 (smaller aperture) = slightly blur background

is that what you meant? its confusing when the aperture size in the opposite of the f number haa.

and....
50mm = bigger image
18mm = smaller image

if that's so, when is prime (no zoom, fixed) lens preferred over zoom lens?

For those who want to learn or understand how the Golden Triangle Rule works, check out the following link.

It should be useful to most people starting out on DSLR who want to shoot in M Mode.

Send me a PM or SMS to arrange the timing and date you want to collect at. I'm having exams soon, so can't be meeting up very often. Thanks.

yes basically that's the jist of it

well primes usually have wider aperture (eg 50 or 85 f/1.2) and hence are used for their bokeh effect. also the wider aperture enables low-light photography. so far this are the 2 applications i can think of. hope it helps =)

Those who ordered the Screen Protector from me:

Collection

Venue: Funan Digital Life Mall, Level 5, near Food Junction
Date: 31/01/2009
Time: 11am-1pm

I do know the timing is a little short, because i'm having my exams soon, and i need to study for it. But if you can come down on Saturday, i can wait a little longer for you.

If you are unable to make it on that day, please kindly PM me or SMS.

Hope no one backs out from the order, because i've already cut all the pieces nicely for you and ordered the lint free cloth as well.

Thanks!

No problem. It's all about sharing information.

Well, you got what I was trying to put across. :thumbsup:

As for why primes are preferred over zoom lens, I think benghui had some reasons there for you. To add on, being able to shoot at f/1.2 to f/1.8 makes primes a fast lens. You won't want to miss a crucial moment for an important shoot like wedding or sports event when photographers in these fields tend to use primes. Wedding from 50mm to 135mm and sports from 200mm and longer (Those BIG guns behind the goal posts for soccer matches - spot them! Haha.. :D)

hi. i'm relatively new to photography, only picked it up half a year ago. i just borrowed a canon 70-200mm f2.8 non IS lens from my uncle, i'm wondering what kind of shots the lens is ideal for besides sports. i'm wondering if it will take decent shots at night such as the esplanade from the fullerton side.

ideal for low-light without flash eg concerts. well since the focal length is long can be used for sniping/candid as well haha

You may want to mount it on a tripod for night shots. :)

And the lens is brilliant but it's darn heavy. I once lugged it to Marina Barrage.

But had been using it lately for my church events. Fast and AF accuracy is great.

A head without plate?

Then how are you going to mount your camera?

It's normal if the seller had purchase the head (pan/ball) separately with the plate.

ah...i see. its more about the aperture for achieving effects and letting more light in so shutter can go faster.
the mm is more for bringing sometime distant closer. yup, think i more or less learn how to differentiate the lens.

velasco just bought ur tripod? which model and how much?

whats simi, whats bor? Anyway, the tripod plate how to purchase?

simi = wat
bor = ( loosely translated ) - or not

The camera plate can get from the usual photog shops such as Cathay for example. Check for compatibility with the ballhead clamp first.
