Hi,

Plan to buy my very 1st DSLR camera after many years of Point and shoot camera.

Is Canon EOS 1100D a good choice for entry as my budget is about $700

I also don't mind getting a good pre-owned DSLR.

Please advice! Thanks!!

It is, go and get it. The camera is very capable, most problems occur behind the viewfinder :)
But since you ask for opinions, mind sharing what brings you to this pre-selection? There are many other brands and camera models in the market.
What do you intend to shoot? What do you expect? What do you need?

The most important factor is the price, i can get it at SGD $560. I intent to shoot daily life of my son and my family, i am not a professional photographer. Just want to have a better quality pictures. Any better model with a budget of $700?

Have a look at the entry level models of Sony and Pentax. Compare the features at Digital Photography Review, prices can be found in the Price Guides in Marketplace.

Seen u have set u mind on canon, go and buy and start to learn dslr world. Pre-own one only when u have knowledge in selection.

Just get it lah. They are all good. I don't see a problem with any of them.

My advise is to go down to the shops and test those camera out. The Canon 1100D is a great camera, so is Nikon D3200, Pentax K-30, Sony A37 and so on and so for. Go and touch them, feel them, see which user interface, placement of buttons, dials, etc etc feel best in your hand.

And don't heed too much into what the salesman tell you or try to tell you.

Bring a friend who know camera with you if that is possible.

Happy hunting.

I had shortlisted the following 3- Canon 1100D, 550D and 5100

Which would be the best in your view?

There is no 'best', all three are very capable. You would not be bale to distinguish identical pictures taken by those 3 cameras. Get one, learn the basics and start shooting. The person behind the viewfinder makes the bigger difference.

All are excellent cameras. As mentioned before... go down to the shop and test, then get the one you like best... btw... I don't think you can find a 550D that easily or at all, because Canon had already release 2 more models after the 550D - 600D and 650D.

as said above, there is no best...

alternatively, you can rent 3 of them and try it on your own, compare the features, results, etc. you need to spend some extra $ for the rental, but hopefully you can decide on what you want.

If you are set on the Canon 1100, have a look at the offer by BH Photo Video on Canon T3 ... same Camera but USA label

For USD $ 500, you get 3 Lenses plus the T3 (1100)

1) 18-55mm IS
2) 55-250mm II
3) 75-300mm III

NO SG warranty though ..

You can get it shipped and gst paid , all done about S$ 750
