50mm prime also can do. cheap, quick and good.

choose the F4L IS. nice and light weight. I've sold off my 70-200 F2.8 because of the weight issue

70-200mm f4 IS anytime. Just ask yourself is it essential to do f2.8 or can you live with f4 with the weight & cost savings. IQ wise, I find them the differences minimal, if any.

It's a good idea to get the tripod collar for the lens as well, if you are using it on a tripod that is! I can get 3rd party one here for about $80. Think original Canon is $100+

original canon tripod collar is abt 150-170, 3rd party why so ex at 80? i see the mass sales section got ppl selling for 35-45 thereabouts. I got mine from ebay at about 30

As far as my experience is concerned ( I used it with non-is f4 b4), third party tripod collar ring is just nice- strong, sturdy- made of metal- faithfully serves its purpose as support. For IS, tripod ring is nt as essential as non-IS. IMHO, I will save a few bucks 40 vs 170 cuz I am sure I'l find myself happily handholding most of the time.

No operational differences. Construction material maybe different though. It's a judgement call at the end of the day for you ... if you need one!
