Just bought it yesterday.

It's amazing... can shoot at low light w/o depending on the flash too much.

Just buy it... highly recommended.

The first generation one is more solidly built with full-time manual focusing with a distance info window as found on the f/1.4s. The mount is also metal.

2nd hand first gen ones are even more expensive than a new 2nd gen one.

I know of 1 person who bought it for product shoot. earn back more than 10X the money spent in just 1 shoot.

For me, I bought one cos its siimple good and dirt cheap. Where can you find such a good lens for only $100+

If only the 1.8 II were better built. I don't mind paying a bit more for better built quality.

Why not get a second hand 50mm f/1.4 USM? It could be bought for around $460. I bought mine at that price with 6 month warranty left.
Used it a few time only, but really like it. Gives very nice bokeh at 1.4

Nah, i don't buy 2nd hand lenses.

So which shop still selling the 1st gen f/1.8? Thanks in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong. 1st gen made in Japan n 2nd gen made in Msia?

That's for the f/1.8 II. Now current batches are all made in M'sia. Fortunately mine's from Japan. :)

cheap, sharp, llight, convenience but very "plasticy" IMHO...

Agree. The built is also not very gd, but overall very gd value for money.

What is the difference between the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 and a kit lens from Canon EOS 300D?
Better parts? Less moving parts? Better built? ??? Will it be better then the kit lens?

LOL..........
