I know the version 2 have no IS... But the Ver 2 is 20% lighter than the ver 1.
That is 950g vs 805g.
But have you realized I made a comparison of lens and the differences with and without IS????
If you see the weight of IS, it is 55g for the F4 and 180g for the F2.8 for the 70-200mm... and I do not think that is a lot of weight....
If the people can handle a 950g version 1, why not a IS version, assuming you add 150g as IS weight to the Version 2 of the lens.... and it is around the 955g.....
Of cos, we all have different weight bearing capacity, and that weight of 955g would be just fine for me.............

I also don't think Canon will release the 24-70 IS. That will effectively retire a lot of lenses such as 24/2.8 IS, 28/2.8 IS and who will buy those primes between this focal length (excluding the f1.4). The only way I see it happen is they come up with a 24-70/2.0 IS that weigh 3kg and price it >$15k. Can be used on their C300. Then it will create a new market without affecting the mass market so much.

Wanna guess how heavy Tamron's 24-70 VC weighs?
you can't compare the canon version with tamron, the tamron is cheaper & is not well built as the canon version, and if you look at the rear element, you're in for a shock when you zoom, the circuit board in the lens is exposed, make me wonder how can they proclaimed this as weather seal...

Still, it reinforces the point that an IS model can be built light, if they wanted to. Just if you are willing to pay them for it. Moreover, you can use good quality, light materials to reduce the overall weight of the lens, just like how the 400mm f2.8 IS went from 5.37kg to 3.85kg and still gained a stop worth of IS, while maintaining the level of build quality your customers come to expect.

The RRP price for the Nikon 24-70mm is S$3339 and yes, although the street price is quite abit lesser. Note that this is a very new lens, and so most shops (if there is only one at the moment) might be selling at RRP price. After a while it should drop to 2k+ like what we are seeing in the 1st version of the lens.
