Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS

Just got my hands on this lens yesterday at some shop in Funan for $129X. Yet to do a real shoot but very satisfied with the results from some casual shooting out from my bedroom window. The corner to corner sharpness blows my old 17-40 out of the water. IS helps to do take acceptable low light images handheld for up to 1s (not leaning or braced against anything), YMMV. - another reason besides video on why IS is implemented on this wide angle lens... when you are out and about travelling, nobody's gonna wait for you to set up your tripod a in the late evening or night.

Wa bro you bought the lens!

My 16-35mm f/4 IS, I notice a loud noise of the IS when it is ON, is it normal?

Its normal bro. Most IS will emit a humming sound when it starts to get engaged. The sound of the IS should not be louder than the sound that the focusing mechanism of non stm/usm lens makes though.

hm.. is it worth to upgrade from 17-40 to this len?? any comment?

I used to have the 17-40 long time back. It did serve me well then. That was way back when i was using 350D.

However i recently looked at some Raw files and felt that the corner sharpness isn't great when shot on ff.

The 16-35 f/4 i got is sharp corner to corner. Do i think it's worth upgrading? I personally do if shooting on ff. YMMV

As G-man pointed out, YMMV. I'm relatively satisfied with the 17-40 even on FF. I don't zoom in to the images 100% to look at the photo.

For my usage, mostly uploading to FB, Flickr, and printing them up to A2 size, I would say that for me, it's not worth.

Lens profile for 16-35 f/4 IS is out on ACR8.6 and LR5.6

I have tried on both. While LR required me to save that setting as a new default by selecting the lens model from a drop down list, ACR was pretty much automatic.

I used the 40mm pancake on my 1D3 two evenings ago at a company BBQ. It clearly was not wide enough but I didnt have anything wider. Got me thinking about the 16-35 f4L IS, especially being able to use the 3-4 stop IS at slow shutter speeds. Granted f4 does not allow me to stop much motion but for posed shots, I would think the IS helps a lot.

If I didnt have such a use in mind, the 17-40 would probably be a great budget choice for most users and uses out there.

anybody has both the 16-35mm II and 16-35mm F4 lens that can do some side by side test?
ie:comparing F2.8 vs F4,F4 vs F4,F8 vs F8,F11 vs F11 and F16 vs F16?
preferably without any PP done,on a steady support and ofcourse not biase.
Thanks :)

Company events, perhaps the 24-70 f4 IS? 24mm is wide enough, I think.

Behold the new f4 trinity? 16-35,24-70,70-200 f4 IS Ls.

hehe damn i'm tempted to upgrade to this 16-35 F4 IS from my current mark 1 F2.8L.

I am a :vhappy: convert. I just need to use it more ... urgh.

Heh I managed to get my hands on a 24-70 2.8 i. That should suffice if not yeah the 24-70 4is sounds good!

Wrt using it more.. Isnt that always a problem for hobbyists? Everyday I look at my dry cabinet and I wish I had a day off every month for each of my cameras and lenses. :)

Interesting how the new lens actually performs better at 35mm outwards from the centre, than when its at 16mm for the imatest. The corner performance also seems pretty good.
