new lenses are always expensive with not much street price discount over RRP.

one of the reasons why i went for a 300mm f2.8 IS mk 1 instead of this very nice mark 2 zoom.

Good idea..can stick on a1.4x Tele con n still get good focusing n iq

IMO a very good, flexible lens for wildlife / sport usage :)

Been reading the 100-400 reviews here and there. Sometimes, when Canon releases a lens, it's only to add the IS mechanism and image quality is either similar or just very slightly better than the older model. Then it depends on the user if he or she really wants the IS to pay for the difference in price.

But for the new 100-400mm II, there are a lot of major improvements over the first model IMHO. Besides noticeably better image quality, it's almost a re-design of the whole lens. So I thought the sub-3k price is rather reasonable? I was even expecting it to be about S$3.2k.

The only problem is, as I did mention previously, if one will use this lens often to justify the price. I think for those who say this lens is expensive, maybe it's because you don't find it being used that often? I find in Singapore, this lens is "not quite here nor there" for a photographer's shooting style. It doesn't have large aperture, focal range is not too bad but Sigma and Tamron have more reach at cheaper prices (although aperture size is not fantastic). So I think in terms frequency of use and popularity, it's not like the 70-200mm. Serious birders will likely not even touch it and consider the much more expensive big aperture 400mm and longer primes instead.

BUT.... if I lived overseas and have access to wildlife in my backyard, national parks, this lens is definitely an attractive option to get as a hobbyist! The problem I think is what to shoot with it in Singapore. There is only so many limited times you can go to the zoo or bird parks. And F1s and air show come once a year only :)

At 400mm f5.6 for f1 will you still see the fence in you pics?

Probably depend on where u are shooting from. But generally u won't be able to see the fence even at F5.6 but u won't be able to get the whole car in frame especially side view shots of the cars.

Thanks for the info. I have been using my 135 with a 1.4 extender. Still can see a bit of the fence shadow

Bought! Can't wait to pay with it!

wa nice!

samples please hehe

buy from which shop?
$2650?

Hi,

From Cathay. Usually get almost all my lens/bodies from them. Except the Movi M5 (they don't carry it). The rest from B&H.

Anyways, $2899.

Regards

CP really chop carrot!

Oh yes, they also quoted the most expensive price for 300ii.

hmmm 2899 seems ok compared to B&H's USD 2199 which works out to 2900.

thought SG is usually more expensive than B&H prices

Hmmm

Great lens so far. I just need some getting used to with it. Using it more for wedding cinematography.

Regards
