Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Telephoto Lens

A little bit of trivia. This lens is the top selling L lens since pre-ordering was announced online.

Really? Just hope it is not a dud...

I hope that it is not a dud either. I really doubt that it will be.

Canon has been coming out with some pretty awesome lenses in the past year or so!

I expect that this one will be a winner too.

Yup! It is outdone by the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens.

Yes, the few recent zoom lenses have been good..even the ultra wide efs 10-18mm has been pretty good.

This lens starts shipping this week!

Any updates on local price?

Just curious... Who has this lens been targeted for, even when the first version was in the market?

Cos with the smaller variable aperture, I think you do need very high ISO to do birding? Adding extender will make AF difficult and requires even higher ISO.

Can I say it's mainly for the occasional casual bird/animal shooters who can't afford or don't want to pay for the much more expensive prime super zooms?

For events, I would think even the smaller and lighter 70-200mm f/4 would be better.

apart from being for the occasional casual bird/animal shooters, it is also practical as a "light weight" lens that gives a flexible zoom range from 100-400mm. Bringing this on holiday will be more fun compared to bringing a 400mm F2.8/500mmF4/600mmF4 for example.

The 70-400 F4 will be F8 if you use a 2X TC to get it to 400mm and IQ will be impacted as well if you want the reach.

both lenses serve diff purposes.

Thanks for sharing. Indirectly, I'm trying to gather "ideas" on how this lens can suit me. :)

Personally, I think this is definitely a long overdue lens with significant improvement over the first version.

Tempted to get but it's one of the few "I want to buy" lens but I know after getting it, I will probably use it fewer than 5 times in a year. :)

From your replies, can see you dun need reasons. Just buy. :)

I have the older one too. If you buy the newer model, kindly give us your impressions and opinions of it especially in comparison to the older model. :)

can't wait for the lens.... initial user feedback from forums shows good results even with a 1.4X TC

Last Sunday, I saw one at the Marina Square. It was reserved by they were willing to sell it. Price $2990.
