Canon DSLR - What is the one lens I need for holiday - Canon 500d

:) Hello everyone - I am a new DSLR user and just got myself a Canon 500D - I have the kit lens 18-55 but somehow it seems limiting - on both the ends. :D I am going on a 10 day holiday - mountain, beach, family, friends and would like to get some advice to get 1 lens that I can live with and not worry about changing etc. Any advice please? I already had some "dust" :o in the sensor and Canon cleaned it out free;

I currently owned both the 18-200mm and 17-85mm lenses, I used to think that the 18-200mm is the one lens I should bring for holiday but after a couple of trips I realized the 17-85mm lens is more ideal which cover 99% of my holiday pictures and it is much lighter than the 18-200mm lens.

I would strongly suggest not to change lens outdoor or in the coach to avoid getting dust into your sensor.

It's not that big a deal. Unless your definition of outdoors is the Sahara desert.

Actually, it's still OK even if one is in the Sahara desert... as long as the wind does not blow sand into the camera body. :bsmilie:

Anyway, I have changed lenses under all kinds of crazy situation... right down to Arizona deserts with strong winds blowing... it's all OK as long as you know how to hold your camera facing downwards and change lenses quickly.

It's NEVER a problem for me. I think people should not be afraid to change lenses. :bsmilie:

BTW, I only travel/hike with two lenses: Canon 10-22 and 17-55 f/2.8. They've gone to beaches, deserts, volcanoes, Himalayan mountains etc with me. There were only 1 or 2 occasions when I wished for a telephoto lens. ;p

i hv this sling bag that opens up easy via velcro (got a snap lock but I leave it open when shooting).. then when open up got a space to put 1 lens so i can swap it with the one fixed to the camera (while the other lens is at the buttom, normaly 50mm lens when i sit down to eat and to take some closer ups) ..

with this bag, i can change lens almost anywhere..

sometims i think a gd compact cam can be a gd all pourpose holiday camera :)

1. for street get a 17-70
2. land scape bring wide loh
3. no need bring telle rah.
4. always bring 1 small light backup lens hahaha

i am a landscape person too haha... thats why going to offload my kit lens 18-200 for a 17-40 L lens instead. :) cos i dun really zoom that often...

I would suggest 18-200mm =)

for traveling.. 18-200 is good if u are those ppl who likes every photography genre... landscape, potraits, object stills...

but if u are those who like only certain aspect of photography, then u will know what lens u need.. its pretty simple la.

so if u like many types of photo style, and u very particular that all also need L lens (so 18-200 is out).. then u will probably change so many lens that u may win a award for fastest lens changing (if there's one!) ..haha

I think a P&S cam will more suitable for you!

cant change lens? then what is the point of us getting so many lenses???
haha....
i bought a 10-20mm, 17-70mm and 70-300mm for my entire trip recently.

honestly, i rather have a dust on my sensor, pay $ to clean it...rather than, not nailing that perfect shot i always wanted...

i mean..i cant go like "i really wanted to shoot the whole entire notre-dame with my 10-20, but....i cant change lens, so lets forget about this shot..."

what is the point of photography then?

Should just get a P&S with superzoom capabilities. Lol win.

Sound like my FZ50, Focal Lens (Leica) of 35-420mm, full manual zoom & focusing & TTL external flash function...

But remember the TS have already a 500D.

My opinion as an newbie on budget: for holiday : 18-200 sigma(no os one just got at $499,<8cm length, and 400g weight...) use this for all outdoor shot where you dun know what your next target might be ...... .might be scenery, might be the nice girl across the road, and under bright condition should be ok for this lens...and won't tire your hand...unless youre a pro that demand highest PQ......for indoor, I have a tamron 28-75 F2.8 good reach for indoor shots , although not that wide, but seldom wide shots are needed indoor...bring nifty thrifty 50mm 1.8 for food shots, all 3 lens very light...cheap also ...spoil not so heart pain..hahah

If is just for conveniences n without the troublesome of changing lenses... maybe you can consider this Sigma 18-250mm or Tamron 18-270mm for your all in one travel lens. :)

just my opinion, dont scare of changing lens, that's the wonderful part of playing with dslr, but if you can only bring one lens, my vote is canon 18-200 is.
