Kit 1 price?
Any free gift?
Seems like quite reasonable priced...:)
Seems like it will be my ideal first DSLR

i seriously dun think its Kit 1 price... shud be body only. if its so cheap, 450D sales will be seriously affected

Maybe so, but I hope that it is Kit 1 price.
As $1400 is very near to the kit 1 price in Japan,
anyway if it is below $1500 for kit 1 is a good buy IMHO:)
I think that 40D got almost all the features that I would like to use already.
The latest 50D new features is like a bonus features, which will probably cost about $400 to $500 more.
For a tight budget user like me, maybe 40D is much more suitable.:)

did not consider the 450D? grip too small for you? I'm still considering betw this 2 models.. I'm just worried that i'll be lazy to lug the extra weight of 40D out if i intend to travel light. well noise performance of the 50D will definitely be much much better I suppose..
anyway, welcome you to this forum... looks like you are quite new =)

I was considering these 2 models also. I am using Panasonic FZ50 now and I like its handling much. The camera serves me well for ISO below 400 but its low light performance is making me headache for that. I always use manual control for my lovely FZ50 and I would like to switch to DSLR for better noise performance.:)

I have tried the 450D and just feel like the grip is not that comfortable for me. 40D gives a similar handling feel as compared to my FZ50. Another point is that I just feel like the 450D is a bit over-priced now but 40D is quite reasonable priced for its build. :)

ya.. i oso feel the grip of 40D is much much better to hold though i got small hands. but tats an extra 300g w/o the lens.. will decide again .. so wat lens u going to pair it with? kit lens? or the tammy?
u going to japan soon? cos i see u comparing with japan pricing...

Going by previous trends, when the new model is available, the older model will see a significant drop in price. But the 50D is not in retail yet, so I doubt the 40D price will drop much during Comex. Probably just more freebies thrown in only.

I am aiming more towards the 40D too. Most likely will skip the kit lenses, as I don't wish to spend more money on lens upgrade soon. I did some online research and still can't conclude which would make a better general purpose lens. The contenders are 24-70, 17-55 and 24-105. Can someone help to share the pros and cons of these choices?

i agree with u on the pricing... tough for 40D to drop much further...
not an expert but i think u got to see what u shoot loh..
24-70: you might not find the wide end of the lens wide enough on a 1.6 crop factor camera if you like landscape
17-55: widely agreed as the best walkaround lens. but pricey la..
24-105: again, maybe not wide enough, but offer much more than the 24-70 in terms of reach
personally i've not own a SLR yet. but these are what i feel abt the lens from what i read here.. :embrass:

there are numerous threads on the comparisons of the 3 lenses mentioned. maybe you should take a read there and decide on the best for yourself.

I personally think price will drop further with the 50D launch. Feature wise, 50D is definitely significant above 40D. Canon is targetting both D300 & D700 in the Nikon quarter, and likely to price it slightly lower then D300, which is currently around 2100 (and likely to come down to 1999 range with all the frantic launches for newer models). So My guess is 50D will likely to be 1899 at launch. And some shops could sell it at low as 1700 (my wish). With that, 40D price has to be further depress to $1300 ? And 450D has to goes down to $1100, and 1000D $850 with Kit. Comex is coming, so for those who can wait, probably should wait a while.

IMO, the potential 40D buyers should wait till the 50D launch then compare the price.
As 40D might have a final cut on the price to clear off the stock.
The 50D price on the other hand will be much higher than 40D, so it's a good deal for a 40D Kit 1.

I bought the 40D in Hong Kong at almost S$1300 last Saturday. Of course, I am a bit dissapointed but I reckoned that the 50D will be more expensive anyway. Do look out for the clear stock pricing once the 50D price is announced, if you think the 40D meets your needs.

Cheers.

the first few batch may be problems riddens as usual from most of the camera models that first came out. Unstable

Yes and No.

Yes because it is very well written with detailed explanations. There are many articles talking about focal length, dof and technical section explaining how USM, IS works or the technology behing fluorite / DO glasses.

No because it's a bit outdated. Lenses launched since the 16-35mkII are not included. Plus you can get it online for free although I prefer reading the hardcopy.

Those buying a 40d better to wait a while. Prices are going to fall when the 50d is here in 1 months time.

Depends on which copy you get. I have the EF Lens Work III, Mar 2008, 10th edition. And it has the 16-35 f/2.8 II, 200 f/2 IS and 800 f/5.6 IS. Naturally, it doesn't have the recently announced 18-200 IS.

Went to Comex during lunch time today. Shucks, so many people!!! It's torturous to shop at Comex. RRP of 40D no change, but got more free gifts such as 160GB external HDD. The Canon SLR booth is manned by AP. I wonder who would pay RRP for the 40D, must be a goondu.

Those who have patience and not in a hurry, wait for 50D to be launched and there will be a final dip in 40D's price

Seems like the price is not dropping yet for 40D.
Tmr I will go and try again the 450D for the handling and viewfinder...
I think that the COMEX price for the 450D is not bad as I have long wanted to buy a portable hardisk.
The extended warranty with free lens looks like a good deal.

Will it be cheaper if I buy two sets together?
