WTH! I checked with CP today and was quoted $1460 for body alone. No photoframe as free gift, only 2GB CF and 1 photobook. What the crap! Do I look loaded???

Huh? isn't that the normal price? Just that it's 50 dollars more... if you don't like them just go somewhere else then..... why curse and swear at CP?every shop has it's diff price? 1460 is reasonable... it used to be 1799... so quit complaining.

One of my friends was quoted by Song Brothers in Sim Lim SGD1,500.00 for 40D 17-85 kit...

Is there a catch here?

I dunno sounds like a watch out for a gray or "SIMLIM" set. HAhahAHHA. just watch out i have no idea about the cam shops in simlim got bad exp from other shops so never get my stuff from there

He also told me that he was quoted by another shop for SGD 1,300.00 :o

Hello, not that I am hard-up for any free gifts, I can live without a photoframe. But a blue note more is not something insignificant. Ya, ya, ya, it used to be 1799, but now is now. I will be dumb to pay more for a commodity like that. Yes, I won't patronise CP, will buy from John and MS instead.

CP.. didn't reply to my quote request. When I walk in, they quoted me $1490 before GST.
So... off I went to MS

I guess CP is not interested in small deals. They want to quote high, let them be. Maybe they are more interested in earning tourists' money or those photojournalists who come in to buy $18k lenses.

Yes... i can't agree more that a blue note is impt i am a student myself and i know how hard it is to save but as you see from here, prices really vary. I believe at JO you may get a similar pricing... maybe at MS slightly cheaper i dunno prices fluctuate all the time unless you know the owners, then you should be able to get them at a fixed/cheaper price? I am not saying you are wrong just that with 1.6k, 50 dollars fluctuation in prices between shops seems slightly insignificant to me..... sorry if i had any misunderstanding....

No problem, dude. Times are not easy and with all the inflation, every dollar counts. A rational consumer will always seek the lowest price possible, unless he/she does not have the luxury of time to do so. I don't doubt CP's service standard, but if there are others who can provide the same service level at lower prices, why not? In the age of the internet, price comparisons and market intelligence are all readily available. I don't necessarily have to buy all the components from one shop. Eg. I can get the body from MS, lenses from John and lens protector from CP. It all depends on who can offer me the best deal for what.

or if one shop can offer the best deal for all three and save me walking around or taking transport from one location to another :)

however, be careful of the "kena con for 'cheap' accessories' tactic.

they grab you for the main purchase, then offer you a host of inflated accessories at 'package' price. filters, bags, protectors, memory cards, lens cleaning kits, etc etc.

i remember i was offered an iPod for an unbelievable price but i 'had' to buy a 3rd party charger (which goes for $20) for $75 or something like that. When i refused the charger, he refused to sell the iPod.

For those of you who bought the 40D, which lens/lenses did you opt for? Is there a main lens which you use 90% of the time and which is that?

When you purchase a first dslr, you're not investing into a camera, but you're investing in a system of photography. There will always be 'a range of most used lenses'. I believe many 40D users have / would like a EFS 17-55 f/2.8IS as a general walkaround zoom lens.

would really depend on your style of photography. one man's meat......

Yes, I know that I am getting into a "system of photography" and will need a few lenses. But I hope not having to get a few at one go. I have also heard many positive feedback on the 17-55/f2.8 and might just get this as my first main lens. Thanks for the other suggestions too!

Hi toy :) i will be new to photog soon after my exams that is... in DEC. Yea i heard many too but i think many will suggest the kit lens for awhile... Me too after playing with my fren's 400D and D300... i think the kit lens is suffice for quite a time. FOR ME maybe a 70-200 f/2.8 because i love portraits and i take stuff most of the time indoors and i dun intend to buy a flash any time soon :) yep anyway just my 2c worth :)

labla, envy that you're getting into dslr so early :p me bought my 1st pns camera only after started working.

if going for kit lens, i think the obvious choice is kit2 despite its higher price. upgrading to the 17-55 will cost another $500 or so. me too, don't intend to get a flash soon. but if i win 4d or toto, then it's an entirely different story :bsmilie: if you mostly indoor, isn't f2.8 essential?

have you decided to settle on 40d? or the 450d? d300's price is a bit beyond me. canon is still my 1st choice!

Hey toy:P yea 2.8 will be good(which is why i will get it over the f4) but i gotta work like 2 months part time after my exams if i want to buy it. but i have heard quite bad reviews about the kit 2 lens which is the reason for me not getting it. if you win 4d or toto buy me one 40D oso ok? :P Yea settled on 40D now just waiting for exams to be over in dec. yea d300 is a COOL and it's good but very pricey it's about 2x 40D. Canon's my 1st choice too.

toyboy, dun get any lens first..

Seriously when u play with ur camera and ur new body, you will know whats your limits is and what to get to go across that limits. Every people use dslr for differnt kind of shooting.

So better not ask blindly and buy blindy.

Just my 3 cents. Cheers

ok, so you are suggesting that i should buy the standard package, either kit1 or kit2 lens, first? i will be using the cam mainly for outdoor shoots - scenaries, people, etc.

labla, what negative feedback did you hear about the kit2 lens? just curious to know ;)
