Canon 7D?

Yes, FF sensor is 35% larger than 1.3, so the number of chip can be produced on the same area of material is 35% less, so it should cost 35% more that 1.3, that what I said it uses more waffer base material.

It is definitely easier, higher yield (less failure rate) to fabricate a bigger size than squeeze into a small size chip.

I would say the FF sensor should not cost more than 50% of a 1.3 sensor.

Going by your logic, wouldn't an APS-C sized sensor be the most costly of the lot, because you'll be squeezing so many photosites onto an even smaller sensor.

Makes no sense right...

I hope there'll be built-in flash for the 7D:bsmilie:

I for one hope we get the new 7D or ? by March of 08.

Yeah I agree it makes little sense

And the 1/1.8" 12 MP sensors in P&S cameras should cost $5,000 each!!!
And the miniscule sensors used in mobile phones should cost $10,000 each as they are really really tiny like less than 3x2mm.

I read in an article some time ago that full frame sensor cost 10 times more to make compared to APS-C sesnor as it is hard to find a full frame size semiconductor on a silicon wafer without any defects. Furthermore for a full frame sensor, it is harder to incoporate the micro lens and other layers that is needed.

yap. it requires a two pass light "printing" process to obtain the desired patterning on the silicon before developing. With more processing steps, costs go up. With increase estate area, defectivities increases yield will decrease. In the end, all these costs are transferred to the consumer.

On average, a basic sensor takes 6 months to develop provided everything goes well. This does not take into account the electrical design part  All total to about 2 yr cycle to see a fresh product (built from ground up).

curious ah.... it says magnifaction is 0.71x ?? i tot full frame is 1x ??:dunno:

seems to be fake, read comments down and check the original link to the supposed barcode - it's no longer a '7D'.

VF 0.71X magnificaion lah not sensor...

okok... my bad..

wow.... the 7D predictions.. seems like just a 5D juiced with all the new technologies. no MP improvement, and with 5fps....

actually. 5fps is ok.

but why on earth no MP improvement.. using back the same chip for improve the pcb circuit board ? :bsmilie::bsmilie:

i hope its not a sub3k camera.... :bsmilie:

Might be fake announcement.

However the intention to deliver a cash cow model fast is not fake.

Every manufacturer will be going great guns to pump out a star model camera in view of the coming 2008 Olympics and just imagine the market for the masses.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If they miss the opportunity they are dead.

Confirm will not be a sub3k model (though I certainly would not mind it being one) ...

well.... i am guessing it will not go more den 4k... but doesnt mean i may jump ship ... :bsmilie::bsmilie:

so many pple pm me and ask if i jumping ship sia...

in fact.... selling all my gears because of personal reasons la... :(

Wouldn't the pros all be using 1D der, while the masses PnS and the XXD series? I don't think the masses would be attracted to the wonderful sensor technology when they find they have to pay more than double of a 40D or something like that. I may be wrong though.
