Canon 7D

One newbie question...

If the 7D is officially launched, I think the price of the 5D may drop. So is it a wise choice to buy a 5D then?

Firstly, camera prices will always depreciate. Such is the law of technological obseletion. By the time you buy a camera, it's actually already obselete. Canon engineers have come up with something in their labs that renders your technology, so to speak, outdated.

Secondly, as mentioned by someone above, do you need a 5D?

Actually i'm thinking of passing my 350D to my cousin and then upgrade to a better camera. If upgrade 5D i think can last me for many years, but i'll see how's the 7D review. Can't wait for the launch!

Thanks for the replies!

Do note that if you do upgrade to FF, your lenses' resolving power must be there, if not the IQ will seriously lack punch. FF is more than 'lasting many years'.

Secondly, is it really a need? Do you need that FF coverage? It sounds like you've got a bout of BBB virus. Are you a professional shooter or a hobbyist? Your 350D can last you many years too. Maybe you can spend that 3-4k on a good lens, and a flash? I duno about your current equipment and what kind of shooting you do. Care to elaborate? ;)

But not being a professional photographer... you dun even need to buy 3-4K lenses.

You'll not stop till you've got THE ONE.

If what I've read about the reason why the EOS 5D is cheaper to begin with than the 1Ds series sensor-wise, it's because the 5D FF sensor is made using a two technology that stitches two smaller sensors.

It is unlikely that they would want to re-use the 1Ds mk2 sensor in a lower-end camera, as the sensor is the most expensive component .... given it's size, it's very hard to seed/manufacture - very high discard rate.

For any 5D replacement, they are more likely than not to just design a new sensor or upgrade the 5D variant.

I don't need the FF sensor, but i do need the 12.8MP, so i can enlarge it to A0 size, frame it, and hang on the wall. If there's any way that i can increase the MP in my 350D, then i'll not upgrade. I was thinking, can i tell Canon to custom make a camera with 20MP but has the same functions and quality as the current 350D?:dunno: :bsmilie: The 39MP Hassleblad and 16.7MP 1Ds is beyond my limits, so 12.8 is good enough. Anyway i downloaded the sample images shot with 5D and they r really BIG.

Not too long ago there's an exhibition along orchard road "Earth from above" by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Very impressed with that and i hope to enlarge my photos that big. I'm not joking, serious. I went to the printing shops at Bras Basah very often and i see the printers print out A0 size posters and its really not the same impact as 4R or 8R. And its actually not that expensive to print A0 size. I printed once before, not photo but a piece of graphic design, and it cost $60 including mounting.

I'm crazy about megapixels. Many of my friends also tell me to buy better lenses instead of chasing the megapixel count. But i just can't help it as i love big pics.

But i guess there'll be a time when Canon launch the EOS PixelInfinity:bsmilie: I'll be the first to grab it.

Thanks for all the advice. Sorry if i sound childish and crazy about the MP thing.

what's the biggest that 8mp can print to in terms of A* sizing?

i'm not really familiar with the *R sizes...

Well, one man's meat is another man's poison. I can tell you that if you're gonna chase the megapixel count, it's gonna be much easier to go flat broke. Megapixel counts increase much faster than any manufacturer can come out with a longer lens.

Do you really need to print A0? The question here is need.

i think he already stated that to him it's the "want" not the "need", he loves big prints

You may be missing one important fact: This is Ken Rockwell the joker boy, writing. His "writing" if you may call it that, is moderate entertainment on a boring day.

used to mount my 17-40 on a 30D, until my uncle was kind enough to loan me his 5D, i realised what I was missing. though some may argue that 10-22 on the 30D essentially does the same, but the bigger viewfinder makes a big difference to me. i don't have to buy a lens which, possibly in the future i will not be using (and possibly a duplicate focal length). so FF coverage to me will a natural progression (when I have the money to get one, that is). I am not shooting professionally.

Are you a professional shooter or a hobbyist?

For yr infor, there are some women drivers who cant even do parallel parking and they are driving the "S" class, the Lambo, etc...

Some members here may just close some property deals, making a killing in the stocks, en-bloc, 10 months bonus, etc... so buying a $10k cam is nothing relatively. It's the
"feel good" factor, just like the ipod, etc...
For those who got budget, there are always so many things to consider/research ...

it'll be more interesting if the 4D/TOTO number is calculated from the picture you choose.

And use the histogram to calculate the number possibilities...

have u also considered the Hassy or other MF digital backs have 16bit colours vs 1DsII/5D 12 bits on sensor? after seeing one, u'll realise what have been missing. i'm praying very hard for normal DSLR to have 16bit sensors.

its not juz about using ultra wides to fill the equivalent FOV. another important factor is the perspective distortion. the 10mm ultra wide will have more PD on a 1.6x DSLR than a 16mm on FF. yet another consideration... optical resolution. 5D with a 16mm will resolve more details than 10mm on 30D. there's physical limitation in making ultra wides with very high optical resolution. add that on top of larger sensors with bigger pixel pitch, u can understand why some people wud love to own a FF DSLR.

I do know that a medium format 6mp can print up to life size. That was what I know some 7 years ago. :D When my ex company (first fews that go into digital, lightphase digital back) started going Digital. BTW *R sizes are for photography, A* sizes are used in design. :)

Does 350D to 5D sound like natural progression? Furthermore, adelynn88 is printing A0 because he/she likes big prints.

well.. to think of it... if adelynn88 gets a 5D straightaway, she won't have to contend with moolah lost through the buying and selling of a 30D.. or will she go further for a 1Ds?

i personally wanna go full-frame.. but for the price? seriously even if u're living in the us and make full use of the rebates, it's still gonna burn deep in ur pocket.. you could afford a couple of lenses with the money saved... right now, a 350D is fine with me.. although i'd like to get a 30D (or maybe 40D?) coz of the spot metering and double wheel, and the larger grip...

another point to note... in the case of printing A0... when one prints big, u tend to look at the photo from far... i don't think u'll be scrutinising the photo for details at every inch... it's simply too big.. so u don't have to have that many megapixels.. it's just another number that adds cost.

that said.. i think u should just live with what u have.. u've gotta have more reasons than big prints to wanna get a full frame.. learn to live with what u have... i dun even have the money to own a good canon lens... all i have is the kit and the tamron 28-75.. but what do i do? just practise with what i have and make the best of it...
