Canon 7D Mark II - Specifications

Well, it seems that Canon will want to reserve the BEST features on its premium FF like 1D & 5D series.. while trimming down some specs on its 6D & 7D (offered to those segments of people who wants a more budgeted "pro/semi-pro" series.

I suppose they will bring in the dual pixels AF (and soon on all across the FF as well) for the 7D2 and definitely increase the MP & AF points by a big margin. But however I do not forsee them bringing in the 61pts system into 7D2 for the moment (even though I will be thrill if they did that!) ...

But now seeing Nikon is bringing up its semi-pro range to good features and Sony's FF are giving Canon a fight! .... seriously if they still wanna hold back on giving out features, they will end losing bigger share. Probably except those sports/action pro protographers who will remain absolutely loyal to Canon bcos their investment is already there!

[truncated]

One thing for sure, many "blood" (money) will be spilled when new products come through!! ....

Actually the 7D is positioned as the premium flagship model of Canon's APS-C's lineup. The 7D2 definitely not going to perform at the 1D level, but I don't see a problem putting it on par with the 5D3; only difference being with an APS-C sensor and high fps (and agreed - it will not get the same 61 AF point system unless they decide to cover the entire viewfinder with AF points lol).

But again its all speculation at this stage (more of a wish-list really). Also, as you pointed out, with peer pressure from Nikon's semi-pro range (including the rumored D400) and sensor technology gap closing in from all other manufacturers, Canon definitely needs to do more to stay ahead of the game.

Actually why not? The m43 and X-Trans (Fuji's APS-C) are already capable of clean ISO 3200 despite their smaller physical size.

If Canon wants to maximise profits, what they need to do is to create a "pro-grade" (re: Approaching 1D Series) APS-C camera such that users would not hesitate to own both a FF and APS-C systems...and not be handicapped by using either. Currently the Canon APS-C range (even the 7D) is handicapped to the extent that its being looked upon as a poor man's alternative rather than a real substitute.

It seems to me that niccon2 was quoting your previous post and he meant that ISO improvement of 2 stops over the 5D3 at $3k will seems reasonable to him.
If he was comparing against the current 7D,then the chance is there and may be pretty high.
as for the ISO performance,it varies according to individual acceptance level.

i agree with your first paragraph.
7D and 5D series are different machine that should not be compare directly.
7D series should be equivalent to 5D series in their own status.
and 7D series I believe will be placed higher than the 6D series in terms of "status".
the result will be clear once the specs and price is released.

Yes, this I agree with too.

Somewhat disappointing... CR says that the 7D2 will not be announced until the 2nd half of 2014... [CR2]

Canon EOS 7D Mark II
We’re told there is zero chance of a 7D Mark II in 2013. The camera is currently slated for release in the second half of 2014. We’re told the final specifications of the camera are far from complete, but it will have the same 20.2mp sensor as the EOS 70D. As well as the Dual Pixel AF and built-in GPS. At present, it will not have wifi, though this could change for the final product.

give you more time to save more money so that they can sell you a higher price and you can still afford to buy.

I think what's more worrysome is that CR seems to suggest that whether the 7D2 does become reality is dependent on the sales performance of the 70D.

But having said that whilst I'm sure there will be a 7D2 at some stage I'm not sure about whether there will be a 7D3 eventually....

2018?

I think a key consideration will have to be that the camera comes with only a single processor man, my 7D is nearly completely locked out from the wonders of Magic Lantern due to the dual digic processors. :(

Even though the last rumour was graded 'CR2', I would not read too much into it. If Canon does not introduce the 7D2 until the 2nd half of 2014 which is what CR is advocating, then that would mean that the 7D will have been on the market for 5 years! That's far too long in this day and age. A boost in ISO is far over due as well as a better sensor and other technical areas.

Well... from what I see... Canon would release something very close to Nikon and/or vice versa. 7D would come in direct competition with the D300s of Nikon, while D7000 would be to 60D. At present moment Nikon came out with the D7100 while Canon answered with a 70D. But Nikon's D400 was nowhere in sight too... and I believe D7100 or D7000 was actually not replacement for D300s. So I think we can actually look at Nikon too, if Nikon announced their D400... then I think the announcement for 7DmkII will not be too far off.

Yes, your speculation provides good food for thought. I just hope that Canon comes out with an announcement in the next six months. I am not in a position to buy a 7D2 in the near term, but six to twelve months from now would be just about right. I wouldn't want to acquire one within the first six months from launch as I would want all the bugs to be worked out.

A 7D2 as a backup to the 5D3 would in my opinion, be an ideal combination.

I still have interest in APS-C cameras, mostly because of the optically awesome but low-price, low weight EF-S trio (10-18 STM, 18-55 STM, 55-250 STM).

If Canon delivers a 7D2 with a much improved sensor that compares well with its peers, I shall consider getting another Canon APS-C DSLR to complement my already awesome 6D. It won't be the 7D2 though 'cos I expect the 7D2 to weigh > 800 g. My inclination is towards 70D/700D/SL1 size & weight.

I think your line of thinking is very good. You are clear about your needs and wants.

Anyone saw the studio shots from the 7dmk2..it's on Canon watch...very clean at 12800...amazing

Dual DIGIC 6 processors for jpeg is very impressive. Actual sensor performance however as revealed by early RAW files however is rather similar to 70D.
