Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II good enough to replace primes?

according to the test chart you've provided
the 70~200 IS f2.8L II actually triumphs over the

85 f1.2L
and
135f2.0L
when they are wide open

impressive :thumbsup::thumbsup:
but i wonder how it would do in terms of color reproduction and micro contrast when compared to the primes
but i'm really becoming a fan of the 70~200 IS f2.8L II

Hi, I probably have the same question but recently, i gotten a 100-400 and while shooting a few pictures with it, you start to feel the weight.... i also heard that 70-2002.8 IS is heavier then the 100-400....im starting to wonder if you are going to sports where you would need both lens on 2 cameras.....:bsmilie:

Yes, the 70-200 2.8 is a little heavier. I've only held the mk1 version of the 70-200 and it does feel like a tank compared to the 100-400...

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens 52.6 oz (1490g)
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens 48.0 oz (1380g)

use monopod...

who cares? all these lenses are already damn sharp so it all boils down to real world performance.
As for that, photographers who prefer to go light will pick the primes or the f4L IS instead. On top of that, the 70-200 is one huge-arse white lens which is obtrusive for documentary and portrait shooting. And it doesn't have the f1.2/f2 which primes offer.

zoom or prime, one will wish for the other one not attached to the camera....

whatever lab test comparison, it is whether want to bring a luggage of lens, got the time to change lens, whether landscape, portrait, street candid or travel / walkabout /street shoot.....
what you shoot more often, which one more practical...
whether the photo opportunity allow change of lens...
whether practical to sling 2 or more camera bodies, shooting for event is fine but for travelling? I doubt one needs that kind of attention.

and spare cash to own them all:sweat:

Been using the 70-200 mk II for a while, even overseas holiday .... it is indeed heavy where you dont feel it at first, but as time passes, all said i love it ..... and like most heavier lenses, not for the fairer sex, unless using monopod or those stronger ones ...

All said, it really boil down to users to weight the pros and cons themselves ....

Any one knows where got stock for the 70-200 2.8 Mkii? Saw 3 copies last week at MS, 5 days later all sold.

Was at MS this afternoon around 4pm. They have 3 sets at 3.4k each. Tried it on 550d body n it feels really good n sharp. Got to give it a miss as it is out of my budget:(

i agree with you on this but different ppl have their own view and thinking which is why some ppl prefer a mac over windows or the other way round :)

It "felt" sharp? That's probably the most honest comment in the whole thread.

Perhaps I'm overracting and maybe you did actually also test the lens properly, in which case accept my apologies. Although to be honest, if you did just feel it, then like I said, take it as a compliment that you were being honest.

If you did test it, did you compare it with anything else? Take pictures of it hand held at slow shutter speeds at high ISOs?

There's too much faff around.

But... it's an L lens of course it's sharp.

But... I have a psychic ability, I can tell how sharp a lens is merely from feeling it.

A little like Zeiss lenses inherently have a magic glow, nevermind Leica. You know inherently from the blue motif and little red dot that it will be better than anything else out there.

/swoon.

If it needs saying, the vast majority of users on this forum would never notice the difference in optical quality between that lens and a cheap 70-200. Most of those who would notice, wouldn't necessarily suffer from having a cheap 70-200 either.

Jed, if one day Zeiss decides to make a 70-200 for Sony, I'm switching camp haha

Sorry for the OT.

Back on topic,if you guys think carrying around a 70-200 all day is heavy, I have a few good friends (you know who u r), carry 2 pro bodies (one with 70-200 2.8 and the other with 24-70 or 16-35) and an IR cam all day :bsmilie:

Here's one taken few days ago using this lens on 5D2:
