Canon 5D1 vs 5D2

Must also consider the age of the camera. Repairing it can cost quite abit. At the end of the day, is your decision whether to take the plunge.

Depends on what u're servicing. For the shutter unit still can manage but it's the sensor that's the killer.

21mp is alot but seldom ppl will print those big poster like displayed on the bus or bigger ?

More flexibility in cropping is the real gem in high MP sensors for most.

Thks guys. I am grateful for all the frank pointers. I suppose 5D1 is still going strong. I will certainly be having a hard time deciding. Btw, I HATE to do video with my cam simply becos I feel it would be better off to get a video cam instead.......... less bulky.

But how is the resolution on the 5D1 LCD? Does anyone any idea about the clarity? I have a habit of taking a QUICK glance at the LCD before deciding weather to retake another shot or not. I almost always shoot single and VERY rarely in burst.

Is 5D1 capable of ISO6400? I have been pushing this limit on my 50D.

Once again thks guys :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Noted that u are using 50D now. If u like the colours and IQ of 50D, 5D Mark 2 is the same as they are using same sensor except bigger. Hence noise management is better than 50D and I already have no hesitation using 50D at high ISO.

5D Mk 1 is old processor and has almost same colours as 30D.

Diff pp has diff opinions as each has diff experiences and exposures. For example, my group of friends and I would say that 5D Mk2 is so much better than Mk 1 but that is our opinion. To really know what u want, rent both cams and test it. Check out on this forum for the rates. Test them until u shiok, then invest.

By the way, under low light, 5D Mk 1 AF is much better than Mk 2. The problem disappears when it is mounted with the better L lenses. Same issue as 50D under low light.

I'm quite happy to shoot at 1600 iso on my 5D and will push it to 3200 if i want to get the shot without it being blurry.

It's still a great camera and I won't be upgrading until the 5D mkIII or 5D mkIV!

Thks Guys,

I really apprec all the positive feedbacks. I suppose I will be renting both I and II to have a hands on exp.:thumbsup:

Thks IhsanChua for info on the iso/Af /etc on I and II.:)

Thks neech7 for the cropping info. :)

Thks Snoweagle for info on cost etc and various useful info. :)

Will update u guys once I take the plunge.

Actually even at ISO 3200, it's still very usable.

I had the 5D1 before upgrading to 5D2.

For its current price (abt $2k +-?), the 5D1 is great value for money. The images are sharp and noise control is excellent. I upgraded primarily for the 21MP, which allows for greater cropping.

All said, the 5D2 = 5D1 and more, and I'd recommend it if affordability isn't a primary limitation. :)

In fact now 2nd hand lowest can be up to around $1.7k for the body alone.
