I don't think Canon may view it as flag ship.

G series is the top series in the compact line, thus the latest is called GX as it will be the flagship compact

1D is the top series for DSLR, thus the latest is called 1DX as it will be the flagship for DSLR

5D is the 2nd line for Canon's DSLR, probaby it isn't called 5DX. Plus, I think 1DX is probably more deserving for the "X" - it is a combination of the 1D and 1Ds line, the 1DX is really the cream of the crop for Canon DSLR, combining the speedy AF of the 1D4 and the FF properties of the 1Ds3. On the other hand, the new 5D3 is kind of an improvement of 5D2 instead of a brand new thing, or a merger of 2 lines, like 5D + 7D line.

Just my thoughts.
