Canon 550D

$899 USD btw...
500D RRP were adjusted to USD$799 a few months back.

i agree this new cam pack with good video power, but as a photography, i think no point upgrade to this cam as it does not really have much improvement in the field unless this cam prove to have much better AF and photo quality!
I will see the ISO6400 performance first before commenting.

So far I am contented with my 350D's ISO4000 equiv. performance.

Canon sells more entry level DSLR than prosumer or pro level cameras. This translates to more profit and probably more money for R&D, better paid staff and all that. Thus, it makes sense for Canon to sell the next hot entry level DSLR. I am sure its the same thing for Apple selling more iPhones than Macs.

The new manual control features of the 550D is very exciting and should allow folks who have discovered DSLR video more latitude in controlling their video shoots. I for one am sold on DSLR videos. Edit: also notice the mic input and 60fps at 720p which means you can halve the speed to 30fps and get some interesting slowing down of motion. And the Movie Crop option... interesting....

It will be exiciting to see what the 60D / 5D3 / 7D2 will incorporate since it will definitely be better than the 550D. :)

I am also very attracted by the video function. Too bad can't get one. Still waiting for the might not coming 60D...

my 450D going to be obsolete

No, only 500D obsolete... 450D can upgrade now! it is hard to justify for 500D users to upgrade

Will want to buy a spare cam aft I get my 5d2. Maybe 550d?

You're thinking very much way ahead... LOL. Get your 5DMII first la then think about spares.

The specs look pretty good. But... how come canon doesn't wanna put the quick dial wheel instead of those 4 buttons at the back of the camera? I used to own 400D, and those little buttons drove me crazy at times. Not very user friendly imo.

you got a point. haha. actually i am just asking because since the thread is hot now everybody will tends to look into the thread so i will have more opinions rather waiting until june when the thread is nt so 'hot'.

and i just bought a 500D 5days ago !!!!! i depreciate 200 dollars in 5 days..

Maybe i can demand some compensation from canon? The sales assistant should have warned me of the 550's release and ask if i wish to change my mind.

being obsolete is fine wad. as long as can still use to take good photos can already.

450D still takes better quality pictures than the 500D if u dont need the video function. live view is pretty much useless imo.. it's slow to focus and noisy. Now that 550D is out 5days after i bought the 500D, I wish i had gotten the 450D instead.

The sales assistant would not have known of the pending announcement. That is why there is a Canonrumor.com website.

Not sure I understand the rational behind having a spare DSLR if you are just a hobbist? Of course, I would have a P&S or prosumer camera standby just in case something is wrong with my DSLR. But, to buy another DSLR, even an entry level one and let it sit there doing nothing (Since your primary camera will be functioning 99.95% of the time) is beyond me.
