Can u drop yours and let me see?

well i love to shoot people at gatherings. currently using a 18-200 Canon lens.. but friends and peers told me to get the 50mm if want to take some nice close up shots of ppl.

Well, I am using the same setup as you intend to get: 18-200 IS plus the 50mm f1.8 II.
If you like taking photos of people/portraits, but not sure whether to go with 35mm, 50mm or 80mm focal lengths (which depend really on your preferences for full body or half body shots, etc), then the 50mm/1.8 is a great investment. It is the cheapest lens in the Canon range so you can really can't go wrong as it offers pretty good optics for not much cost. It's a great value for money lens, and when you've decided which shooting style you prefer for parties/portraits, then you can get one of the other more premium lenses later on.

And you get to keep the 50mm/1.8 for general duties in severe conditions ie. when you are shooting in harsher environments exposing your lens to sand/dust/salt water, etc.

hi engrmariano...

wow tats cheap for $100.. whr do u get it? was thinking to get one.. :)

Saw a few mention of the Canon 18-200 on portraiture. Personally I think it's how you use the lens that matter most.

Below is a "Bokeh" lens test shot taken by the Canon 18-200 lens:

Glad you enjoy the shot. For the technical aspect of this shot you could refer to : http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5369605&postcount=150

Alternatively for most of my shots found in CS, the EXIF can be found in the photo themselves. :)

Hi, apart from portrait shots, with the f/1.8 factor, low light shots will be good too, right?
Similar to the 17-55mm f/2.8 (minus the zoom).

The f/1.8 can be useful for very low lighting but do not expect your photos to come out sharp. f/2.8 wise even at very low lightings, it's literally useless.

Depends how "low light" your environment. If it's near pitch dark, you are better off with a kit lens with an external flash than even a top dollar F0.9 lens.

I got this len recently, the intention to get this is the nice bokeh at F2 ;)
It may be right it is a MUST HAVE len for Canon user due to its prices and F1.8 ,also the quite decent IQ .What I dislike for this len is the plastic mount :angry:I don't mind to pay abit more for the metal mount if Canon can produce 50 F1.8 III

Depends on what you want to shoot finally. Stationary objects don't need f/1.8 but rather a good tripod and remote shutter. For moving objects .. see Anson's post.

I ever shot a private event once with my 50 f/1.2 wide open without flash in an almost pitch dark condition with smoke all around. Can only just make it.

So I guess it's still worth it to have this for low light shots (not pitch dark!) then. A serious contender then. Thanks for the advice. :)
Just to share, I was at MS earlier, this lens is selling for $125.

I got mine ar Parisilk store for $120

This is the photo taken at F2.5

this is my new walkaround lens. very light & small, compensates my gripped 5D2. sharpness is acceptable for me, all my shots are at f/1.8 (the reason i bought this lens for).;)
