well i love to shoot people at gatherings. currently using a 18-200 Canon lens.. but friends and peers told me to get the 50mm if want to take some nice close up shots of ppl.

Saw a few mention of the Canon 18-200 on portraiture. Personally I think it's how you use the lens that matter most.

The f/1.8 can be useful for very low lighting but do not expect your photos to come out sharp. f/2.8 wise even at very low lightings, it's literally useless.
Depends on what you want to shoot finally. Stationary objects don't need f/1.8 but rather a good tripod and remote shutter. For moving objects .. see Anson's post.
