Interested in getting this lens after reading it up on the net.

1) Any alternative for this type of lens for my APS-C that you guys suggest I look into? Mainly because of 200$ budget.

2) Which SG online shop sells it the cheapest and gives home delivery so that I can at least get it within 4 days?

I don't mind used set but prefer new coz I am unable to test it before hand.

You can head down to Canon Showroom at vivo city to try out lenses. Techno gadgets provide delivery but does not come with warranty from Canon. Alternatively, you can get a 50mm f/1.4 for $300+ 2nd hand on clubsnap.

If you really want to get a new 1.8 set, Funan has a few shops you can try. Price $90-130.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah my another option is to get a 2nd hand f/1.4 I'll think about it.

I will take a look around the shops that you've mentioned when I come back to SG, which is mid April.

Really depends what you shoot. Some people feel 50mm on crop is a little tight for everyday shooting.

Nonetheless, the 50/1.8 is cheap good n reliable.

You may also consider the 35/2.

Yeah starting to realise that after watching sample videos in youtube of the Rebel sporting the 50mm lens...

I'll take a look at 35/2.

For now my mind is mostly decided to get the 1.8. There's no excuse not to because of my budget constraint.

How about looking at the very small and thin 40mm f2.8mm STM? Not exactly the fastest lens around, but very very good and sharp... If you can live with 50mm f1.8, I believe you can live with 40mm f2.8 STM and the price difference aren't that much different too.

Just now my mind was on < f2.0 because I was planning to experiment it on low light condition, but now since you've mentioned it you gave hope to 40mm f2.8 hmmm. Tough choice!

I liked how the 50mm 1.8/1.4 works on a Full Frame dslr (Photos + Video). And looks like the 40mm could give me the closest effect on a APS-C frame... but the f/2.8 is making me hesitate. Not sure if it makes much difference for low light conditions.

40/2.8 also can use on FF. But unless your camera supports STM e.g. 650D, not that cost effective to get the 40/2.8

Frankly speaking... for me, I wouldn't care if it was f1.8, f1.4 or f2.8. I normally shoot at above f4 and if lighting became kind of bad, I rely on flash... or a tripod/ monopod. And don't worry, even if you are using old Canon DSLR, the STM motor still work well... STM (are actually the motor within the lens like the USM) and are specially created for those people who do alot of video (and using Canon DSLR that support AF in Video mode like the 650D), but that does not mean it cannot be use for normal DSLR :)

Making sense of the STM lenses and the 650d AF: Canon Rebel (EOS 1100D-300D) Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

And from those description, actually when put into taking stills, it still applied and so... it is still as good or even better (theoretically).

Well looking at the situation, I just got my own camera after years of playing with my buddies and got a push to actually "invest" on my own one, so the reason why f/1.8 was a good option for the past 24hours is because i have a wide range of fstops to experiment with. After @rhino123 mentioned that he normally shoot above f4, looks like at some point in my life i might stop stop using bigger apeture just like u? so Cant really say the f/2.8 is actually a "restriction" to my experiments if I actually get the 40mm lens, but more like i gotta learn how to take good photos with what ever gear I have.

As for the AFs, at this point of time, I dont really use AFs when making videos or even pictures because I tend to play with the focus ring more so I dont really care what type of motor it's using (Loud or Quiet) but like I said, I'm still experimenting and it might come to a point when it matters but for now, no.

BTW I'm using a 650D. :D

Somehow I'm regretting not getting a Full frame because most canon lenses are designed and optimized for FF(?) i conclude. But lets put that aside, the reason why I got a 650D is mainly because of budget and me getting a taste of photography. I see "Restriction" as a good way to foster creativity. Haha. Also I'm so familiar with my buddies 600D and 550D and kit lenses so wanted to get something familiar too.

Do read up on reviews and take note of the so-called 'sweet spot' of FF lenses when put on APS-C cameras. Just because a lens is designed to work on FF it does not mean that there are any restrictions or problems when putting it on a APS-C cam. On the contrary, some lenses perform even better if the outer areas of the image circle are cropped off by the sensor.

Actually this boils down to personal shooting style, you might or might not shoot above f4 like rhino123 as you move on. I for one, shoots at f2.8 quite a lot I enjoy that the option is there for me to shoot at wider apertures. So it depends on your personal preference.

Dude, you can always try the sigma 35/30mm lenses. Don't forget your crop factor. You might get too tight a coverage.
