Canon 50D purchase: Is it worth it?

Whatever the camera is makes no diff. There are still professional photographers using 1DS (mark1) and taking amazing photos. So 50D is more then capable. Now is whether your skills are up to par.

If you ever try to get another camera again, do understand what you like to shoot and where you like to shoot first. From there it is easier to get the right equipment. If I am starting of in photography, I will probably start with 1000D and kit lens to explore my photography style first then progress from there.

TS: Just use what you have not and shoot shoot shoot....discover what your style is then work from there. I hope I have a dad like yours!

Just checked the prices out, and the 50D cost an average of about S$450-S$500 more than a 40D, whether with any kit lense or body alone. However as a newbie and with budget constraints, I think the 40D is definitely much more worth it. I have heard that you will get the best out of the 50D with better lenses, so this would ultimately mean that a 50D costs much more than S$500 more, because you would have to invest more in lenses too. I have decided to spend that extra on another lense, a dry cabi, and some leftovers ;)

Then again, if you have the budget and the nice lenses already, I would say 50D would be the better choice.
