hi, i'm new here..

i wondering which model 550d or 500d is more appropriate to buy and worth for money. i'm still considering between this two for their difference in specification is only a bit from my point of view and the difference in price is about 300-400....

Glad to be here..

regards,
Marcus

If i am not wrong , the different is only less then 200.... (actually it's 150)

hey there...

i juz got a 550D...
was comparing the 2 as well last month...

besides the obvious difference in megapizels....here's a listing of key differences from dpreview. Hope this helps... =)

EOS 550D vs EOS 500D Key differences

* Higher resolution 18MP CMOS with gapless micro lenses
* ISO 6400 no longer in 'expanded' range (12,800 max remains the same)
* Redesigned buttons and new movie/live view button
* Customizable auto ISO ranges
* Improved 63 zone metering (iFCL)
* 3:2 format screen with more pixels
* Improved movie functionality
* Slightly higher burst shooting rate (though buffer holds fewer shots)
* HDMI control (CEC)
* SDHX Compatible

Well... alot of technical mumbo jumbo there....

Thus there is only one thing that I could advice... "If price difference is only S$150... get the newer one." in this case... it is the 550d ;) If the difference is S$1k plus... then maybe you would want to think twice and get the older version.

eh..yeah..wahahaha...but if he's to get a DSLR...he should get exposed to technical mumbo jumbo... ;p

anyway comparing body price...500D about $950, 550D about $1100....difference $150 only, why think so much??? :devil:

only buy what you need. $150 can buy another 50mm lens.
the difference in specs may not make such a big deal anyway, then why pay more.
in fact i would even go for 450D. Go through the canon preivellege purchase program even cheaper.

My friend... in that case, u might as well settle for 1000d, since 1000d's spec and 450d spec is almost the same (at least on paper).

The thing here is... TS had narrowed down to 500d and 550d, and since 550d is a newer product with better technical mumbo jumbo that you would never know if you would need it or not in the near future when you are more proficient with the camera.

Plus $150 is not like $1000 and so I think it is a worthwhile investment.

if it's $150 difference out of a $5000 item, then yes I'd agree that it's not a big deal.
It's more than 10% difference in price between 500D and 550D. While it's not A LOT of money, it's still not nothing.

TS, you have to compare the specs of the 2 cameras and determine if the differences are worth paying that extra money for.

The 18MP is something I would not even be bothered about, but if it matters to you, then by all means go for the 550D.

your time to research and ask forumer will cost you more than $150..

i know i know TS shortlisted 2 cams only. But just wanted to point out that a lot of the new features, most people may not use them, then why want to pay more. Out of the 2, i would choose 500D. If TS open to ideas, I would recommend 450D(built wise), or as you mentioned 1000D(spec wise). Because we all know that most probably we wont stick to one cam. Some people prefer to buy the best they can afford, i prefer to buy the cheapest until i am sure what is my direction.

peace....just trying to offer TS another POV:)

from what i heard, ISO control for 550D is quite good and almost comparable with 5DMKII :)

Hi all,

Fellow newbie here, just to share my 2 cents.

I just got a 550D a few weeks back and I LOVE IT!!! ;)

I basically compared Nikon D5000 vs. Canon 550D and I settled that because 550D is newer and the lenses are cheaper compared to Nikon.

I did not do a comparison between 500D vs. 550D as I thought I would get the latest model being offered, which will come with better specs and also better "resale" value (or so I hope...). Was quite an easy decision for me.

My 2 cents. :)

FFA

whole new metering system, upgraded video function, better ISO capability.

these are enough to justify the price difference.
