good mostly for low light subjects. If soft could be bad copy or technique (needs closer DOF/shutter speed monitoring, MF, seldom tripod). Night shots, indoor temple shots, evening/sunsets, dawns, low light action/movement, etc without using a tripod so much.

Or in Fongster's case - too lazy to use tripod.......

Very specialized usage. Eg. like a 200 1.8L - used mostly for indoor sports like table tennis or badminton.

This is like complaining a canon "L" lens doesnt seem much better than seems much better than cheap consumer lens when you print it at 4R .. Its a nonsense arguement..

I suppose you own one else you won't be speaking with such authority on the matter.

The price of a lens is hardly what determines if its quality is up to scratch, as you seem to suggest. I've spent enough time with the 50/1 to know that it underperforms what I think are its two closest relatives, the 85/1.2 and 50/1.4, in terms of focal aperture and focal length respectively. I've shot wide open, stopped down, under various lighting conditions, on supports etc... and made my determination with what my eyes see. I also take into other consideration other factors like size and weight. All this accounts for the usability of the lens.

This has got to be one of the crappiest lens I ever owned. The 50/1.4 beat it pants down. Slow AF, soft images (not usable below f5.6, imo). I wonder what happened to the poor sod who bought it off me .

maybe you sold the lens to him? ;p

Well, don't underestimate the buying power of fellow Singaporeans/CS members. I bought my 50 1.0L from a chap who had three copies (all new as far as I can tell), he let me test all three and I picked what I considered the best (after 2-3 hrs testing). I suppose he was a collector as well.

He also keeps a 600mm+camera in the boot of his car at all times, and one more at home. I think he has the complete collection of L lenses with the exception of the 1200.

And that's just only the Canon part........

If it is a fluorite lens, it is not a good idea at all. These lenses do not take heat well. I think this may be a well known fact to a collector. He probably has a cool garage as well?

That's assuming it's out in the sun? The lens does sit in its own case. But to each his own - it's a second copy anyways.

still i rather see $$$$$ in my account than lug extra glass and metal tubes in my house. different perspective. i shoot to challenge myself as an artist and feed myself, not buy "expensive brushes" and store in a cabinet to broost my ego.

Maybe he do have that $$$$$$ in his account too and on top of those $$$ he still have spare to buy those lens!

All of us have our own view when it comes to something we like. When it comes to an argument our wife.. we always manage to find an excuse to justify our own purchases :) Likewise.. he probably will tell you why he has so many 50/1L :)

where this thread is going...reminds of one time at a local bar over a few bottles of single malt....

it went from how smooth the whiskey is, to how much one can drink and how big one's D**k is.....

oh well...

this reminds me of the guy who said to me....

"why buy a GT3 when an STi can outrun it?"

to which I answered....

"I had an STi and sold it in 11 months....you obviously dont get it...."

Sorry, that I am reffering to myself,I have both M and EOS.

do you see a difference in using the Leicas and the EOS for 35mm shoots?

I am caught between an M6 and a EOS1V .... going to purchase this week

The deal with EOS is that I have some lens already...

The general feel is that Leica is superior to Canon EOS series...and I do admit I like the feel of the Leicas....its feels "right"

both is good lens and have different finger prints, use for different purpose of picture.
