Canon 450D users, please share your experience

Caleb, sorry for the noob question. For 50mm f/1.8 lens, can I also use it for landscapes?

Currently I am using Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and it works fantastic in low light and night conditions.

zzzz you can use any lens for your 'landscape' just a matter of how wide you want

Ryan is spot on. Why not you just try zooming your 17-50mm all the way to 50mm, leave it there, and go shoot, then you'll know. Makes sense?

Does anyone here fiddle around with their sharpness settings? Or do you leave it at the default '3' ? I am using 6 now and thinking of bumping it up to the maximum 7. Are there any drawbacks to using max sharpness?

and PP to your required sharpness

i used 5 for my trip, came back and found most of the pictures oversharpened

Hi all, I am new to this forums and as some of you, I am quite confused on whether 40D is comparable or far more superior compared to 450D. Of course, 40D has very neat features like 2x burst capability, PC sync, superior AF, and so on... but is 450D that bad?

Perhaps the real 450D users who have experienced 40D could share a few words. There are not many "real" reviews of the 450D out there, mostly based on specs and test images which I find too "lab-like" (sorry, can't find a better word). I believe a good review comes from the community itself and that is us.

Just came back from a trip to Hokkaido armed with my Canon 450D and the Sigma 12-18mm f4. Bought it for 1388 from MS Color in AMK centre (2 pieces of 4GB card, tripod, bag, tokina UV filter, book, kit kens). I am new to dSLR but used to muck around with SLRs like Nikon FM2 and Olympus OM2, as well as a prosumer Nikon 8700. Quick Iimpressions of the camera after 10 days. Graphic interface very easy to use, instant start-up time and AF was very fast. Grip bit too small for my liking but small issue. Thought it was too light (compared to 40D and D80) but when pared with the Sigma, realized that the light body was a boon, esp when travelling. Buttons generally well-laid out - only grouse was trying to adjust AF points - a bit difficult when composing thru viewfinder as it involves using 4-way pad. Used P and AV settings most of time and Photostyle function pretty useful. The Sigma lens was very well built and pictures looked very sharp. So far, pretty pleased with camera.

hey, i've been using my friend's 5d and i realised i tend to shoot a lot at iso3200, 50mm f1.4. i do quite a bit of low light photography and sometimes i do shoot at iso1600. now i'm finally investing in a cam and i'm deciding between 450d and 40d. i'm a bit skeptical about 450d having till iso1600, 1/4000 sec and smaller buffer size. but i have a tight budget.

Why are you considering the 450D? I think that the 40D has a better build and i am not sure about 450D's noise reduction but on the 40D it's quite good that's why i am going to choose the 40D I was thinking of the 450D too but i think it's kinda overrated. you may want to try it out. I didn't find it AS comfortable and the colours weren't as "bright" or contrasty as the 40D yea so you may want to find out.

And i think you should just buy a lens with a larger aperture if you want because driving your ISO up too 1600 for both, i believe will be very very grainy/noisy

The 40D has a tougher build, but it's bigger and heavier. Try climbing some 4 km mountains with it, and you'll wish you have a 450D instead.

The 450D high ISO is just as good as the 40D.

40D has brighter colors and is more contrasty??? Please don't make my toes laugh. :bsmilie:

I'm unaware of any existence of such a lens as the Sigma 12-18 f/4. Are you sure you are not mistaken for focal length or brand?

Well, for me, i sold off my newly bought 450D to buy the 40D (5D still too ex). Lost money but i think that the 40D suits me better. My humble views for the change which barely justifies.

The bad, 450D: :thumbsd:
- has a yellow cast in the images and not the 40D (more neutral).
- though at 12MP losses it losses to the 40D for pixel sharpness.
- fps at 3 at best, 40D is about 6fps.
- the biggest reason for me is the grip, though better than the previous 400D is still small and very unconfortalble for long use and losses balance when mounted with heavier lens and external flash. Nightmare!

The good, 450D: :thumbsup:
- LCD screen preview much sharper than 40D (new software). [40D using the 30D software with larger 3in screen].
- lightweight (good and bad, depends).
- 12MP, great for cropping and print (really miss this).
- compact, great for travel expecially with kit lens, 18-55mm or 18-85mm.

Hmm, yellow cast? Have you considered maybe it's simply a case of bad white balance? Any camera will produce a yellow cast if the wrong white balance is achieved.

Are you into birding or sports?

The 40D grip is too large for me. I use the 450D for insect macro with flash. No issues.

I love my 450D, being the very new series in the canon family equipped with very sharp and cheap IS kit lens, considerable small and light weight good for hiking and backpack travels. The grip is never an issue to me, i wonder if my palm is small or the rest of the guys palm are as big as angmohs.

The main con i feel will be the color saturation, i realise my photos are not as brilliant as my cousin using pentax or even my friends with nikon, well that might be the user skill issue.

For me, 450D is a great starter camera, and till the day i master my basic photography skills, i will work hard to build my EF lens collection, and quietly wait for the FF 5D mk2.

My thoughts are, i will rather get a heavy FF camera than a considerable bulky non ff camera.

sorry cos i dun really know the exact details. just tried out the camera. tried both with same lens, kinda liked the feel of the 40D more and th ecolours on the screen atm appeared nicer

Wah. So defensive. In that case, the 450D is a great camera, buy buy, i bought it afterall!! For those still undecided, and might want to see the IQ, check out the following links.
