Good points. 99% of the time I dont need the fast burst rate but could be useful in capturing candid shots.

Due to budget concerns, looks like I've made up my mind to get either:
1) 450D with Tamron 17-50 f2.8, or
2) 40D with 18-55 IS f3.5-5.6 (kit lens)

I am rather inclined to get the 1st one, what do you guys think?

i dont understand, you want to capture candid shots, but you rather take higher burst rate over fast lens (aperture and usm)?

Whahaa same situation. But den if the body is going to last a long time or u feel that 450D is going to outgrown u. Take 40D and also the universal accessories. Grip and accessories can get 2nd hand

it only my personal opinion, does not apply to everyone.

what is outgrow you camera body? do you mean getting higher end body gets you better photo (those that wins competition) that the current camera body cant?

yeah!
just got my CANON 450D KIT 2 days ago!alot of places out of stock..
my 1st SLR and I am very happy with it..

At the moment, candid shots is just an option but not my priority.

Congratulations! Where did you get it from? Did you stick to kit lens?

i was caught up between 450d and 40d too.
in the end, i went for 40D

Price aside,

450d is lighter
40d is heavier

450d appeals to light weight and mobile users
40d would probably looking at so call serious shooters...

however, i am considering it for travel and mobile usage...i still dun mind the weight of 40d
the 700g body dun mean much to me, i am a avcerage 1.6m guy.
i feel more stable holding to a heavier body.
and i have decided that i will not go for those heavier lenses.
i am comfortable with 18-55is and an extra 10-20.
i prefer a heavier body with light lens, rather than a light body with heavy lens..
it will feel lopsided..

40d autofocusing is fast!
the ergonomics is excellent for me! - subjective to individual

i bought the 40d with 18-55is at 1789 from bargain city.
nice guy from bargain city.

btw i use to have a 350d few months back...it felt like a toy camera...
so 450d is a successor to the xxxd series...

i felt better with xxd series

I'm still using a 350D (with BG-E3) and Tamron 17-50. Still getting very good pictures. But the temptation is always there to upgrade.

Definitely. Newer tech will always appear more powerful, but it definitely does not mean that older tech cannot render good photos...

dun get me wrong...im not saying 350d is lousy or takes lousy pictures..
it still the man behind that matters..
but if we are comparing just hardware without other factors...
40d is quality built and slightly advanced...
but again there are always something that is better...
so it really individual choice

Anyone else to vote for either:
1) 450D with Tamron 17-50 f2.8, or
2) 40D with 18-55 IS f3.5-5.6 (kit lens)

Either of the above would cost me less than S$1,800.

450D !
Great camera , if your finger is too big ,you can add up a battery grip later on
but on 40D the camera itself is already quite heavy and add a battery grip will be even more heavier

my choice is 450D but i choose Sigma 18-200mm DC OS for the lens :P

How much did you get? I am looking at pairing Tamron 17-50 with a prime lens for night shooting.

450d is the way to go.. especially for those who love to travel conveniently, and for those who travel with a partner. My wife especially loves the 450D over the 40D as she felt its heavy and bulky. If you feel that you will be the one holding the camera most of the time, then maybe that's not an issue, but if you consider letting your partner use it to take photos of you, then think again. Anyway, I got the 450D. Brothers, take note that you should get a screen protector size bigger than 3 inch if you want to protect the entire LCD panel which is about 3.3 inches.

I decided to take 450D also.

Would you be getting Tamron lens? Best quotation I got is from AP Funan at S$1,749 (incl. gst). Let me know if you got a better source. ;)
$20 $30 differences is okay for me, maybe going to John if not wrong they got free bag included and we can take our time. Tamron lens need to test which I dunno how.
