Crop sensor in other words. 450D is considered crop and need to factor in the 1.6x crop factor.

oh. okok.

lets say i'm deciding to get EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. for a further zoom range lense.

i need a shorter range lense.

got 3 choices to compare from EF-S17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

currently looking at 17-55 and 15-85 to decide. but 17-85 might be one of the lenses to consider.

any comments on it for those whom are using these lens. and other lenses that are able to compete with these 3 lenses. =)

When it comes to EF-S lenses in the short zoom range, the 17-55 IS is king, the Tamron 17-50 is decent but not quite as good. The other lenses you listed are not fast enough either, nor do you need the extra reach offered with your choice of the 70-200 2.8.

Also to add on, the 17-85 is known to be fairly poor at the wide end (near 17mm) with serious CA, distortion, etc.

The 15-85 is similar in iq(perhaps even better), has wider and longer range (15mm vs 17mm and 85mm vs 55mm) and has better bulid quality.

The 17-55 however has constant 2.8 which makes it much faster than 15-85 which has variable aperture, especially when it hits 5.6 at the long end which is very slow. Constant 2.8 is also useful in low light. It really depends on what you need, constant 2.8 aperture for low light and creative dof shots or longer range for increased versatility.

If only they made the 15-85 constant f4:bsmilie:

Would choose EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 over the rest. Just my personal opinion. :) Am using this combination and still one of the frequent used set.

For me,

its a EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS USM for general purpose indoor close sniping and outdoors general.

its a EF-S 70-200 F2.8 IS USM for outdoor sniping, but i don't do nature close-up though. Like some bro said, seldom on telephoto unless it's like an object on away which you cannot reach by positioning yourself.

Agreed with other bros, it's about what you want first then decide with the lens that fits your needs. But I also use EOS450D, just too bad on the 1.6x cropping - I made a mistake here on getting the 450D, might be thinking of upgrading the body some time this year, if no budget to upgrade, I can live with it, just need to get a better angle at things

Maybe might try some macro photography instead... hehehe... but that's another thread liao to consult other bros liao.
