canon 40d troubleshooting

I've sent it in for servicing. Recieved a sms that its ready for collection. Will go down and see what they say!

for me, it was a case of pressing the shutter button, but no response. had to do a few times before it is okie. Sent in for repair, CSC say they dunno what is wrong, but guess that the shutter button is spoilt after pro-longed usage. changed it for 130 bucks i think.

now it is working fine.

Got the camera back. Engineer says they've changed the shutter mechanism.

All is well now. Hope it stays well for many years to come!

Thanks for all the replies and feedback.

Glad to hear TS problem solved. Somehow my 40D also change shutter button only 6 months old and have to pay 130buck, the QC of the button is really poor.:thumbsd:

Im suprised that no one actually went to canon to ask for an explanation.
The durability of the xxD shutter button seems to be less than satisfactory.

many people around the world are facing or have faced the death of their xxD series shutter button.

Canon SG charges $130 for the repair as they claim that the shutter button falls under the wear and tear category and is not covered under the warranty.

Yet there have been cases where if your shutter mechanism falls below the 100,000 shots "expected" for your camera, they'll replace it.
How is it possible that Canon is going to sell a camera which has a shutter mechanism working expectancy of 100,000 but pairs it up to a sub-standard shutter release button that will only work to 10,000 clicks. For every 10,000 clicks, the user has got to fork up $130.

From a user perspective, the shutter release button is the most important button to a photographer, the button that receives the most important instruction but yet Canon is sweeping this problem under the carpet.

With the recent scandal of Toyota product recalls, maybe we should call for better consumer rights and protection.

hi TS, so when u said they changed the shutter mechanism, do u mean the shutter button or the shutter itself ?

Just for a note after using the 40D for about 2 years - have sold the camera since. Shutter failure is common in the 40D series. Not sure why.

Tell tale signs are usually in portrait mode, when you fire off whilst in "one-shot" mode after AF is confirmed locked and beeped, you will feel the shutter mechanism seem to have some vibration / "lack of lubrication/grease kind-of-rubbing".

If you do a continuous burst whilst in this position, chances are your shutter may get stuck - mine did.

I had to reset everything. (remove grip/battery & power on & off).

Over time, when shooting in landscape mode, this will also occur (the odd vibration phenomenon i described earlier).

When shutter life is up, the camera simply will not fire. (some sort of protection by canon i guess?).

Its not so much of the shutter button as some have described but more to the phenomenon i described above.

Hope you guys take note.

Yeah that happened to me before. I forgot that I turned on the mirror lock up function. I don't understand why Canon never makes any shortcut button for the mirror lock up. It's a PITA having to go to the CFn to turn this function on or off.

yes i agree with you... wonder they have a new raw / jpeg button on the 7D but just do not have the mirror lock up 1 touch button....
