Canon 40d EFS-50mm IS kit versus EF 50mm f1.4

well between canon's non-Ls f/1.8 and the f/1.4 i believe the latter has a better build right? and some sites says its a big improvement on the 1.8. well a newbie like me can be wrong

although some people says they're using f/1.4 but normally sets it at f/2 for a sharper image.

as for the 18-50mm IS kit that comes with a 40d... some sites says with that.. its almost no better of compared to PnS. again they could be wrong.

So you need the better build? You gonna be thrashing your equipment or something? If you are purely concerned about image quality, the 50mm f/1.8 is no slouch, and I feel that as good as the f/1.4 version is, you may end up finding that the 50mm focal length is not your cup of tea, and starting with the f/1.8 version will not burn as big a hole as the f/1.4 version will.

I don't know which sites you've been reading regarding the kit lens, but they're wrong on so many counts. Firstly, the IS kit lens is a 18-55mm, not 18-50mm, and secondly, it is WAY better than the quality of a P&S. Feel free to disprove this, but here's some proof:

You can think about EF-S 17-50mm F/2.8 IS + EF 50mm F/1.8

i support that.
EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS is a great lens for non-FF cameras. If you are unlikely to go FF or dont normally use the telephoto range, this lens is great as the image quality is good (uses L-glass), has IS (great for night shots) and has the big constant aperture for a zoom lens.

i think that the efs17-55f2.8IS is an ideal range and the fast AF with its USM would match your purposes and more. but you may end up spending a bit more.

efs 17-55 f/2.8 IS is expensive.

any other lense i can consider? i try to stay away from sigma coz ive read some lenses have incompatibility issues in the long run....

for now i try to stay away from those zoom lenses...heavy.. and expensive... if time comes i will most surely use efs17-55 or tamron 17-50.

for now its just for family vacation shots.

Heck yea! The 18-55mm kit is no slouch at all.

Btw, I came from a film background and thus used primes for the better part of 3 years before plunging into the digital realm with a DSLR. My first lens on it was a zoom, not a prime as zooms give a wider range of possibilities then a prime. Yes, you can "leg" zoom, yes you usually get a faster lens for cheaper and yes it is usually sharper. But the wide range it gives is unbeatable. Just ask any sports or event shooter. Even for family shots, I appreciate the wide 18mm that can take it my entire family without back away 2 meters. Do try both prime and zoom in a store before deciding. They certainly go hand in hand and shouldn't be seperate but for a newbie, a zoom would be preferable.
