Canon 24-105mm f4L - final questions

To be frank, I think you might regret.... I only use 24-105 if I have no choice....and actually it sits in my dry cabi for 1 year already. The last time I took it out was for my student to use.

Bro,

IMHO, I almost get 24-105L also. But I borrow my friend lense then tried on my 450D, for me it is not wide enough as 1.6 crop factor. When I tried this on his 5D yes it is amazing for general purpose lense. So I ended with 17-55mm(have a good resale price if you plan to upgrade to FF). But again if you think 24-105L can satisfy your needs then just go for it :)
try first and buy it!

Yes, as I have said, try 1st before commit.

I think the key here is whether you can live with the 38mm wide angle from 24-105mm.

Yes, and some people really can live with it.
I just don't like.
If you want to know whether you can live with 24 mm on crop, try your Tamron set at 24 mm, or the best is to rent this lens to try.

I hope you've not been influenced by CS to get this lens. I see you've already gotten the 17-50 and f/2.8 even. So why the 24-105?

You don't seem confident about knowing what you need. There's really nothing special about this lens. You just need to know what you shoot more often. I hope you don't end up selling this lens later cos you don't find it useful.

Yes, it all comes to 'whether you like the lens', and to find out, just rent to try.

if only there is a 18-105mm IS F2.8 L USM, it will solve most of our problem, but then again, the price will be at least 3k.

i agree, i will be the first to buy it, best walk around lens.

yo... I think once you started on L primes, these L zoom lenses will start to be mediocre to you.... like for yourself.

My answers to your questions:

1. I don't know and I believe most of us don't really think it is important. Just go to a trusted shop that you patronise and I am sure they would give you a good one.

2. Same answer as 1

3. Because you already have Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 | EF 50mm f/1.8 | EF 85mm f/1.8. There is alot of overlapping here. Since you already have the money, I agree with some members here that you need a 70-200L/F4 IS (an excellent lens) more than 24-105L.

Just my humble opinion. Hope it doesn't confuse you further.

It seems that TS has not give any conclusion after posting this thread. Perharps we allow some time for him to post his idea. Maybe he is considering upgrading to FF, so he is getting it as a standby. Why not we just wait for his reply as this thread is getting thicker and thicker with alot of people posting the same thing.

As many advices given from others CS....

Have you even think of getting 10-22mm? is a very good and nice.
I have it and I always bring along together with my 24-105mm.

Base on your current set up, I dont see any point why you still need a 24-105mm.
is all overlapping...But I think 10-22mm will be better for you.

But if you have plan to sell your tammy 17-50mm, than will be wise to get it.
but 17-50mm is still not a bad lens.

My advice for you get 10-22mm will be better on my current setup.

you mean based on HIS current set-up? :dunno:

I sold mine. Didn't like the distortion at the wide end. But then I am on FF. The distortion factor may not be that bad on cropped sensor until you switch to FF.

Hi guys,

Back home finally after a long day out.. Thanks alot for all the posts, but I think I have to clarify some key issues:

1. I DO intend to get the lens because I feel it fits my shooting preferences, so this thread is not about whether or not I should get the lens. That's why I went straight to asking about what to look out for when actually buying the glass whilst at the shop.

2. The devil's advocate question was purely so that I can find out if there are any bad points about the lens that I haven't already found out through my prior research.

3. Budget is a problem here, can't afford L primes or FF bodies at the moment.

Alex Chong: Yes, until I move up to FF the distortion is not a major issue for my crop camera.

And yes, if 18-105mm IS F2.8 L USM is launched I'll prob sell all the other lenses I have to get it. I'd prob sell my cat too :bsmilie:.

Sorry to ask in ur thread TS. But i believe you may be interested to know as well...

I'm just wondering which option would actually be better for a 1.6 Crop Body...... ;D

Option 1

Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM Lens
Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Option 2

Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM Lens
Canon EF 28-300mm F3.5-5.6L IS USM Lens

Maybe you should just sell it to TS.

You can use the money to buy other stuff, and TS can save some money for some other stuff.

Makes 2 persons happy... why not? Hee hee...

This is a good suggestion. How much is 24-105 selling for new now?:bsmilie:

It all boils down to your shooting style. I find the 24-105 to be just nice on a 400D for walkaround because I like to take tight crops of my subject. On full frame, I find it not long enough.

Only you will know your shooting style and the lens that best suits you. Go ahead and grab it

Don't worry to much about getting a lemon with this lens. Just check the lens code (ake sure it's the latest 09 batch since you're paying the 09 price). and if front/back focus then you can always calibrate it at CSC.

Also, make sure all the accessories are there - lens hood and pouch.
