Canon 17-40mm L f4

If you are on crop, I see no valid reason to get the 17-40. The only reason as you have said, is to get an affordable L lens into your collection.

There are other lenses (the usual suspects from Tamron and Canon) that does this range much better.

Well said bro. My sentiments exactly.

actually is like a walkabout lens... and i like to add an L lens also since i just recently jumped to canon...im using 18-135 but im not really satisfied...budget around 1200...
why do you want an L?

would bw great if you can recommend a good lens for me...
good lens for what?

Googled it already but im asking from experienced user... actually surveying if its really worth buying...
what's the difference between review sites and actual users of the lens?

review sites gives more detailed pros & cons

Well said. For me using 17-40 is a plus for me because it is very wide which just suits my style of shooting. I believe u didn't shoot enough. Go out and take more photos with your current lens and see what focal length u normally use and get the best prime out of it.

Thanks for all the replies...

Well now i understand more about this lens...

Well, ill just decide later on what lens should i buy...

Really appreciate all your comments and suggestions...;)

ef 17-40 F4L is just a "ok" lens:dunno:

EF 17-40 f4L (FULL FRAME)

at full wide open, center resolution good, corner resolution soft! :thumbsd:
distortion control: just"soso". color, contrast, good.
plastic build, if you do not mind. price: $1100-1200.

Tokina 11-16 F2.8 (CROP SENSOR)
at full wide open, center resolution sharp, corner resolution good!
flaw: purple fringe, could be easily addressed.
distortion control: good. color, contrast, better than 17-40 F4L, focusing speed as good as L lens
Metal build, solid:thumbsup: price: $950

wanna full frame lens? wait for the Tokina 16-28 f2.8, price: 850 USD.
The Performance will kill :ef16-35 f2.8L, ef 17-40 f4L. Kindly judge yourself by reading through the link.

Still proud of owning " L" lens? I have no words to say. Maybe the rumours EF 17-50 HIS F4L performance will be better? I do not know.

My opinion is that you shouldn't be a resolution fanatic. I'm a crop frame user, and i'm (almost) perfectly satisfied with my 18-135. The images produced from this lens are sharp enough for normal use (holiday pics, friend pics). There is always availability of stopping down.
Since you are using a crop sensor, if you want resolution and sharpness then get the 17-55 or 15-85.

Studio and assignments are another question. If you need an amazing resolution in a (kind of) walkaround package, then i would get 5D mark 2 and 24-70 2.8. This is my most used combo. I would not suggest 17-40 to a crop frame user. This lens is designed as an ultra wide angle for full frame cameras. A 17-X EFS lens would get better resolution.

I do own EF 17-40 F4L. And i am using Eos7D. With my shooting style i dont require super zoom kind of lens 17-40 is good enough for me. Another reason is the weather sealed as i been to Taiwan this year June and it rains everyday in my trip. Using it on my 7D which give me a full weather sealed setup which i dont even bother covering my camera during the rain. Futher more if you intend to go FF in future then its worth to consider. If not then i sugguest getting 15-85 IS USM or 17-55 IS USM... Thats just me...

I am owning 17-40mmL too and liking it. Using it for landscape photography at f/11-16, corner softness? not known...
Weather sealing is plus esp for landscape photography where weather is not that predictable.
Canon lens on Canon body! :D

Minglink.... at the risk of changing the topic.... I was curious about your practice of using the 7D and 17-40 in the rain with no covering.... maybe I'm ultra careful, but I would be afraid to try this with my 7D. Is it safe? Was it drizzling or actually raining? Have you experienced any errors or other unwanted effects on your camera? Just curious....

It was raining. As I only have only one umbrella and I have to use it to shelter my gf and me so 7d with 17-40 will have to get wet. Of cos I will try not to expose it too much in the rain but I was lazy to put it in my bag as you will never know what catch your eyes next. No error or fault happen afterwards.

My setup was the same as Minglink when I was on 7D.
I prefer more on a wide angle shooting as oppose to tele-zoom and it had been my workhorse for various trips I go....

The reason I choose a 17-40mm f4 instead of EF 17-55mm f2.8 is because I had planned to go FF in the near future. In fact I now on 5DMKII...

I can testified that the weather sealing is pretty good with the combination of 7D and 17-40mm as I did went through what Minglink had experience...

I think 17-40mm is pretty good on FF and it had always been my favourite lens when ever I use it to shoot landscaping... unless I'm missing something over here.

I think this lens is more likely for Full Frame Body Users as the 17-40L on a FF is considered a UWA Lens. FF Users bought this lenses without caring about the f/4, as it is more likely to stop down to f/8-16 when shooting landscapes.

I don't see a need for getting this 17-40L especially on the APS-C Crop Body Users as the range on crop is more likely to be a walkabout lens, however, strict as maximum focal is just 40mm. And for the price, just top up a few hundred, one can easily get a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, or a 2nd Hand Preowned 24-105 f/4 for a longer range.

Wonder if you can simply add polariser filter or LEE / cokin type slot filter for Canon 16-35L and Tokina 16-28?
One big reason for me to keep my 17-40L is it's sharing same filters for my other lens.

I thought Cokin filters will cause vignetting on FF with the 17-40L?
