Canon 15-85mm or 18-200mm

my personal choice is the 15-85, and save up for 55-250 later. if i'm going to sacrifice image quality, might as well sacrifice it all and go for Tamron 18-270. somewhere in between, i think there's a Sigma 18-125 f/3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM.

can any comment if 15-85mm can use tele-converter 1.4x or 2.0x?
that would help the thread starter to reach its length, but not sure if the auto focus could work though

advise please??

Can use Kenko tele converter... Canon's tele converter only work with the Ls.... but it will degrade the image quality....

not sure if u would want to use teleconverter though. at 85mm the aperture is already f5.6, anything beyond that after u add teleconverter u wouldnt be able to AF. I rather use a telephoto than add a teleconverter to the 15-85 or just crop

18-125mm Wow another lens pop up.. I haven't heard many pple mention abt this lens usually it's 18-200mm or Tammy 18-270mm
will take a look at that.. Thanks :)

hmm... if that's the case I guess teleconverter might be out for me... Still a newbie.. am pretty much dependen on AF :s

hey took up the advise of renting a 18-200mm....
wah it's really zoom zoom zoom... hahaha i can even take a photo of a guy across the river, opposite The Central...
but then again... im no journalist and realized my range falls ard 80-135...
so i think i will stick to my initial decision of getting 15-85mm which i think i can always crop the photo..

anyways~ thanks guys for helping me making the decision

hey all, (hijack this thread), been eyeing for 6 mths plus...finally i got 15-85 today...my most expensive camera related purchase other than in 500d (1.5yrs ago)...very happy with the size, happy with daytime shots..really WIDE.. and sharp...really very useful reach to my needs...but tried night shots in the living room...errmmm...better stick with my tammy f2.8 28-75...so i guess i will only need 2 lenses ..15-85 outdoor and 28-75(night n indoor)...to cover most things i wanna shoot...btw..i have the few lenses i play with:

canon 50mm 1.8(bought)seldom used, luckily not expensive
tammy 90mm f2.8(bought)---very light, sharp, good reach and speed but i'm reserving it for macro shots(haven't got interest to go macro yet)..
sigma 18-200 non os (bought) used it for trips overseas..small, light, does its job, average performer expected for this price range
16-35L borrowed(for 1 yr still with me hahaha)--GREAT lens, the L says it all but heavy and limited reach..
canon 70-300 IS borrowed (for 1 yr haha)--limited use, shot the moon once..no occasion to use it otherwise..
almost wanted to get sigma 10-20 but chose 15-85 for versatility...

What are you implying in this thread, senser?why dun you show us your picture instead of telling us how much lens that you have???
Peace!!!!

I think in summary he meant: " I am pleased with 15-85"

My dream : canon 15-150 f2.8,<$1500 and not weigh and look like a LAW tube...
I learnt the hard way, spent on many "cheaper" alternative only to settle with a >1k 15-85 that suit my type of shooting of family/kids and landscape...too bad for the variable aperture but fortunately got 28-75tammy2.8..

still on the 15-85mm lense...

got a question on vignetting that occurs while 15mm focal length
surely it can be resolved with PP later

However, read from the manual... if one enabled the pheriperal illumination function found on the Menu button, will this help to remove the vignetting on the wide angle viewed at 15mm? r would using a CPL filter (wideband- as in Kenko) helps to reduce this too?

Please advise, not too well-verse in Photoshop skills thus the question above.... Thanks

For your info base on mine,if you enable the pheripheral data,it certainly helps a lot.like mine,i can almost see no vignetting on widest 15mm.and for the CPL thing, cpl only enhance contrast and reduce non metal reflection,it wont reduce vignette but instead it add vignette if you screw on the CPL without screw out the UV filter.the barrel of the CPL itself cause the vignette.

Thanks bro...
Will have it enabled then, but when changing lense; do I have to turn them on again or on every change of other UWA lense??

Normally this feature will automatically be turned on unless u turn it off by yourself.but sometimes the camera doenst have pheripheral illuminaton data for the lens.when it doesnt have data, you can still turn it on,but the effect is like disabled.so you have to make sure the body have the data for the lens.
It seems that 3rd party lens, somehow the body doesnt have the data,so i heard that we can somehow download by some mean.i'm not sure.as i'm using canon lens,so i didnt atudy much bout it.
What's a UWA btw?

you can search and download then use canon EOS utility when connected to ur camera to set...

UWA is Ultra Wide Angle lens...

Thanks for the info,i forgot.i thought it was so familiar but just cant remember it....:bsmilie:

but i was referring to third party lens.can the method do apply to that too....if it's the Canon's,i knew the way....

from the manual, it says NO for other 3rd party lense...
guess its natural for them to differentiate lenses from thier competitors!!

anyway, do u notice any slower in the camera after enabling this function?
It probably kinda like a photo processing done in removing this vignetting... any lag if u takes the next photo??

just comparing... thanks a million bro!

There isnt any lag. i doubt much processing is required to remove it.. anw, i use lightroom and the new lens correction feature just correct all lens defects in 1 click. really recommend it.

It would be nice for canon to let people create their own illumination data n input into camera

I owned 15-85 lens with 7d body,it is good len i used it for my trip to shanghai expo,it focus very fast, good image quality. i used it to cover every scenes, i dont even take out my 70-200 L len. :bsmilie:

i dont feel any lag for my case, maybe i was not shooting at high resolution.i shoot in sometime M an S-fine.cos i don't print,so smaller file size wont eat up too much memory for my pc.maybe that's y,i dont feel any lag.or maybe that's your feeling only....it actually not so.....
